Remember having to suck up to the bowl committee members just hoping they’d pick you at seasons end ? It used to be a newsworthy event at LSU if peach bowl members were attending a game

I remember being excited for a new years day bowl
I think I was more excited about winning the Sugar Bowl in ‘01 over Illinois than I was our national titles. Younger fans are spoiled.

As others have said, yes. There is way too much of an emphasis on winning a championship being the only single focus.
It really makes sports miserable as 90% of teams in any given league are not contenders.
Having a good season winning your conference and going to a good bowl game with something that the vast majority of programs in the country would have been head over heels with for all of college football history.
Now if you don't make the playoffs your entire season is seen as a complete failure. Even making the playoffs and losing people aren't thrilled.
Unfortunately I don't think this is a problem that can be fixed. A larger playoff is more accessible but that has dramatically changed expectations.

Depends on who you root for… 9-3 might be great for Miss State but it sucks for LSU and Alabama
There are only 4 teams with a .750 or better win % in FBS in the last half century.

On the CFB side, Alabama/Saban ruined things for everyone by creating the modern CFB arms race

Part of that uniqueness was controversies over championships.
You actually liked sports journalists with a massive inferiority complex choosing a champion?

One of the reasons why I’ve become such a fan of soccer in Europe. Yeah I know soccer board blah blah.
Compared to our sports there is more of a sense of the present to me, and success is more a cumulative effect of the season as opposed to the season simply getting you to the tournament where you can have success. As I get older I like that slow burn.
They definitely have the best and most fair way to determine a champion.
