re: Has the transfer portal closed the talent gap between P5 and G5?

It will be interesting to see how it plays out in the next few years. The overall talent gap will probably be closer, but I bet we will see a lot of inconsistencies and big swings every couple of years with which teams benefit from it.
There have been a lot of G5 and lower tier P5 schools over the years that have built good, consistent programs by being able to find and develop overlooked talent that fits their scheme.
Will they continue to use scholarships on players that will take a couple of years to develop when they can go to the portal and grab a few guys that can make them better immediately?
They will probably go to the portal, but then their own developmental pipeline is impacted, so they have to go back to the portal and replace the transfers with more transfers because they are no longer developing their own talent.
Now everyone is looking to the portal for experienced and developed players, but who is providing the development and experience?

Scott Frost lost at Nebraska to Troy in his first year
A Sun Belt team
That isnt saying much

First Year
That part is key.
Kirby Smart only beat Nicholls State 26-24 his first year
ULM beat Bama in Saban's first year

This is kind of showing that the transfer portal didnt really change much

I think its just showing that you're missing the point. What do we know about first year teams? They were literally just bad enough to fire their coach only a year ago
The only first year coach that lost on Saturday was Marcus Freeman, and he was hired specifically for his ability to keep the team together and continuity with recruiting.

, but I don't think you're going to start seeing meaningful high school recruits go there.
Of course not. I was talking about developmental 3 stars that might get passed over by P5 schools so they have schollies for the transfer portal. A 3 star going to those schools is normal.

So an 0-3 first year coach
A Nebraska team that has won only 16 games in 5 years
And the Texas fricking Aggies
Forgive me if this does not lend credence to a seismic shift in college football

Who said anything about a seismic shift?
People argue on here all the time about how playoff expansion is bad because the top 2-3 teams are so much better than everyone from 3-4 down. Why would a G5's performance against one of those top 3 teams be the bellwether here?
If you need a national title contender to lose to a G5 before you realize that most P5 teams better be ready to play every single week then you'll be missing a lot of the picture for a long time.

Once again, the P5 band together to send the G5 to the brink of insolvency with Transfer Portal mania and NIL. It blows up spectacularly in their own faces. It's obscenely greedy by the P5 elites that reload already in a more sustainable way...to try and get the ones they missed in the lower tier P5's or G5. Transfer portal will be restricted soon.

Don’t we want the best players at the best schools for the sake of the overall product?

Andrew Parker got some minutes last year for the Hogs and started for App State. He was big mad we got Drew Sanders.
