re: Has anybody ever polled American Indians about "The Redskins"?

then why do polls show 20% at best being offended? Exactly. When did we get into the business of wiping somebody else's butt? If American Indians think it's a slur, then let them step up to the plate and voice it.

I don't know? Either way, that's still a pretty large amount of people.

it seems like a non issue with a lot of points to the contrary, but some folks like to talk about it as if they are the Washington Ni**ers.
Again, it's not something you'll see me leading the rally for. There's excessive outrage on both sides. I don't think it's right for a white person to be truly "offended" by the name, but I'm A-OK with showing empathy and compassion for those that are. I also don't think people who show this empathy should be chastised and mocked as "telling Native Americans what to believe". The people constantly claiming attacks on "traditional American values" and other bullshite are just as annoying as the holier-than-thou whites claiming to be genuinely offended by the name. I could see why the name would offend Native Americans and I wouldn't be opposed to a name change, but if the name doesn't change I sure as shite won't lose any sleep.

How do you define American Indian?
By those currently living on a reservation?

I'm not sure. How do you determine who is black? If someone has Indian blood and identifies his or herself as Indian, who am I to tell this person what they "are"?

Right - I agree - so all of this polling Indians stuff doesn't make much sense.
Personally, I think it's an inappropriate name but it's not a government team, so the owner can call it what he wants.
I also think it's kind of sad that they went after the low-hanging fruit on this hard: North Dakota, ULM and Ark State, while not an eye is batted for the Seminoles (and I don't think Indian Tribal mascots are inappropriate anyway).

no, its really not
this appears to be just a single group protesting and gathering the pc white guilt libs with them. if it had any real broad support from the Native American community id certainly not have a problem with it.
quite frankly they should go after chief wahoo of the indians first. that thing seems much more offensive to me.

well you have a point on North Dakota - they had the blessing of the tribe and was still forced to change the name.
I dont think ASU or ULM ever received such blessing though and the Seminole tribe loves FSU.

I agree with all of this.

The NCAA made FSU stop doing their pregame ritual.
That is until the actual Seminole nation said they liked it.

Better question is this: why are so many white people ANGRY at the thought of changing that name?

I'm not horribly outraged all of a sudden by the Redskins name. It doesn't affect me. My stance is that I wouldn't have a problem with changing the name because it actually is offensive to some. Won't lose sleep either way. But I also think the faux-outrage faux-backlash at "PC LIBS" is stupid and childish.
This.

There will always be a sect of the populist who will feel offended if they can profit by the attention it gives to them personally.

I am personally ambivalent about the name change. I have always felt that nicknames were a phony issue when there are more important things to be concerned about.
But since conservatives are so against a name change I am in favor of it only because of that.

I think a major point being missed here is that the nickname is based on an exaggerated physical feature. It's not a tribe name, title or noble trait. It's a stereotype. It's the same as calling a certain demographic the "Big Noses," or "Pointy Heads," or "Green Teeth." That is very different than being the Seminoles or Chiefs.

I'm livid at USL, how dare they call themselves Cajuns!
