re: Has anybody ever polled American Indians about "The Redskins"?

A Blackjack dealer in Philadelphia, Mississippi said he couldn't care less.
But, he said there will always be Native Americans who will be offended by most anything.
He said Natives are just like any other minority, they don't want to be made fun of.
He didn't see a problem with "Redskins".
Unlike the Braves old mascot Chief Noc-A-Homa.
That was very offensive.

even if a poll says it's "only" 20%, shouldn't that be enough?
Think about it.......how much restriction would we have if everytime 20% of the populus bitched the folks in power caved?

Excellent slippery slope scare tactics. We're talking about a nickname of sports franchice. If there's a sports nickname (you know, something insignificant) that offends 20% of a given population (that we happened to be methodically and systematically attempt to exterminate, but that's neither here nor there) what's the fricking point? Why not Senators? Generals?

How about all the caving that has been done on traditional holidays? Hell we can't even have a peaceful Thanksgiving Dinner without people bitching about the diseases that were brought upon the Indians err Native Americans by the early settlers.

What does this have to do with the fact that I wouldn't be opposed to the Redskins changing their name?
I and many others literally never think of Pilgrims and Indians when I think of Thanksgiving. And if it's going to be about that, then why not educate people on how many Indians actually were treated (good and bad)? Knowing about history isn't a bad thing.
I think of Thanksgiving as a time to be thankful for how lucky I am to have great friends and family and spend time with said friends and family. But if you feel the need to feel threatened all the time, by all means...

For the record, my family doesn't bitch about this. I've actually seen this stupid shite in the media.

People that automatically label people who aren't opposed to the Redskins name being changed as "liberal PC" and all the Fox News buzzwords there are out there, while feigning outrage over a (slight) possibility of changing a nickname of a team they have no connection to are the funniest.

for your vote to count, how much american indian blood do you need to have? would the tribes word be good or would one have to prove their ancestry?
and then, if the vote was 51/49, should all native american named objects, teams, etc have to change their name? would the names of all highways, streets, subdivisions, rivers, etc that were named using indian names have to be changed? what about cities? big cloud north dakota is fricked.

why are so many white people ANGRY at the thought of changing that name?
just because your skin is white it doesn't mean you can't have an opinion. also, your skin might be white but you still a lot of american indian blood in you.

I think the point he was trying to make is that the same people who chastise whites who stick up and show passion in regards to a possible name change by saying they shouldn't be able to dictate what is offensive to Indians are the ones who are SO outraged by the idea of the Redskins changing their name.
It's OK for one sect of white people to be passionate, but not the other?
Let me be clear before y'all start referring to me as Rachel Maddow: I'm not horribly outraged all of a sudden by the Redskins name. It doesn't affect me. My stance is that I wouldn't have a problem with changing the name because it actually is offensive to some. Won't lose sleep either way. But I also think the faux-outrage faux-backlash at "PC LIBS" is stupid and childish.

When the all Native American high schools, such as Red Mesa Az, change their mascot to something other than Redskins - then I'll see a reason for the NFL to step in and force Snyder to change.
Until then it really doesnt appear there is much support for the name change from within the Native American community.

One tiny community, school and team comprised entirely of Native Americanas choosing to refer to themselves as that =/= A multi-billion dollar sports franchise with zero connection to Native Americans using the name

they are only one example, there are other majority native american schools who use Redskins as their mascot so lets not pretend its an isolated event.
futhermore, this:

shows you havent a clue. go research why they are the redskins.

That wasn't my point. The point is, a school/town/etc. of nothing but Indians choosing to use the name is not the same as a NFL franchise using it. I wasn't talking about the origins of the Wash. Redskins name, rather - How many of the people on the Redskins board of supervisors, ownership groups, etc. are Native American? Their players? Fans?
Do you see how when a group comprised of Indians use the name it's different than when a group not comprised of Indians uses it? I'm pretty sure that's largely the issue at hand.

then why do polls show 20% at best being offended? it seems like a non issue with a lot of points to the contrary, but some folks like to talk about it as if they are the Washington Ni**ers.
