Kind of a random question, but just wondering if it has happened before. Seems very improbable but I’m sure it’s happened once.

Sorry it was 6-1 only loss being to #2 LSU who won it that year
We rose to #5 in the country

We then lost 5 straight

Not sure.

2017 Mizzou started 1-5 before going 6-0 which was pretty close to your scenario. Their only win in the first 6 games came against an FCS school where they allowed 43 points.

It has to be only recently because 10/11 games was the norm forever.

Idk, but while looking I found out that

From 1920 to 2019, 99 teams started the year 0-6 - the average finish of those teams was 2-12. 0 (0%) of them made the playoffs

The 99 include this year's bengals and dolphins

2016 Miami of Ohio started 0-6, then won 6 straight, went to a bowl game and lost to Mississippi State by 1 point to finish 6-7.

Exactly the answer this thread was started for. Interesting as hell and quite a turnaround.

Thanks for that horrible reminder.

We beat UNC and looked terrible that second half..it confined the rest of the year. Same year as that great Thursday night UK game.

Lost a heartbreaker to Clemson, too.

Sigh.

Texas Longhorns did the opposite. Played in the Rose Bowl one year and didn’t make a bow the next.

I think you’re thinking of the wrong Texas team. In 2006 they went 10-3 and won the Alamo Bowl.

2018 Nebraska started 0-6
They didn’t make a bowl game, and ended the season with 8 losses.

However, I guess some people thought it was a miraculous turnaround because they managed to get ranked in the preseason AP poll.

I'm pretty sure Cal started out 5-0 on year with Pat Barnes as QB and maybe Mariucci as coach and finished 6-6

I know you’re talking about a single season, but in the 90’s Hawaii went 0-12 then went 9-4 the next year winning their conference and a bowl game. That’s the best turnaround I’ve ever heard of in College Football
