I agree. I'm not a fan of Lance the person. I am a huge fan of Lance's accomplishments and his inspirational story.

Yeah, he's great. I hated Jordan, too (being a sociopath brings winning, but it is sort of off putting to me). But I knew he was awesome.

I think Lance was pretty exciting his first couple of tour wins. He made some good attacks in the mountains. Then, as a marked man, he couldn't do that anymore. But he would, with the help of team mates, grind everyone down in the mountains. He is way more exciting than Indurain, who never won a stage save for TTs.

So you believe Lance had better technology and Doctors than the other riders so as not to get caught? I don't think so. They all use the same doping techniques. One rider may have an advantage for a year or so but everyone else catches up.

Depends on what you call blood doping. In the last 10 years or so it's been EPO injections which is more dangerous than the old blood doping....where you trained at altitude to build up red (oxygen carrying) blood cells, extracted those cells and then re-injected them during the tour or before a big race.

i like that the espn's advertisement on the side of the article was one of those "Lance Armstrong -- Real FRS user" ads showing him looking ripped up.

And EPO is a hormone which simply produces red blood cells. The world is crashing down.

You're right, Lance's first two wins were pretty dramatic. And people forget that Indurain was the most boring cyclist ever. Well, except Cadel Evans.

I like what Vinokourov is doing in this year's tour and especially his style of attacking prior to his suspension.

it's dangerous enough that the FDA has warned against using it even for cancer patients, for which it was originally developed.

I have always suspected that Lance is a complete fraud. Folks loved tearing Bonds down because they hated him. I loved watching "golden boy" Clemens squirm while his reputation was destroyed. Even better was watching a bunch of Senators try and defend their hero. If he is guilty and I bet he is, the Lance Armstrong fall is going be even better.

Lemond is a little bitch who can't stand not being king-of-the-world in cycling. Maybe it was that gay-arse taco bell commercial he did..I dunno but he's whacked in the head.

Technically Lemond's aero bars and TT-style bike he used to thrawt Fignon wasn't approved and no other racers had them so you could argue he 'cheated' as well.

Get off your high horse Lemond.

Oh and the OP is right..360 degrees since he's been a dbag to Lance from day-one.

Oh and he was sucking Landis' cock after he won the tour..crowing "finally a clean american champion" until the news came out about floyd.

Finally floyd has lost *ALL* credibility. How can you believe anything this idiot has to say after the way he lied and denied and made fools out of the people who believed in his innocence? He's the worst of the bunch.

Did Lance cheat? Who knows. Get over it. Unless a smoking gun shows up, leave the guy alone.

LeMond always blames others for his shortcomings.

It is Greg's fault for not racing on and winning the Tour in 1985. Hinault was 3 minutes back and had Greg gone he would have won that year.

I looked at old tapes from 89, 90, and 91 where commentators were disappointed in his fitness. They were saying he came in heavy to the Tour.

If he approached it like Lance and focus on that one race then he might have won a few more. Why didn't Greg do the reconnaissance rides of the mountains on the Tour and also come in leaner? If he doesn't get shot by his brother in law then maybe he wins in 87 and 88 or maybe not, but at least he would have been at the starting line.

LeMond and others forget that Lance was a pretty decent bike rider before he got the cancer. Lance has never failed a drug test.

There was a minute amount of a cortoroid in Lance's urine, but that was from a cream he was using for a saddle sore. He had permission to use that cream.

Where is the outrage that the 2006 default champion of the Tour, Perreiro, was allowed to use a supposed asthmatic medicine that if anyone else took it would be booted off for doping. That medicine helps you climb, well breathe actually, in the high mountains. Given that Andreas Kloden is your Tour winner that year. Then again, he does use those breathe right strips on his nose.

LeMond also criticized Contador saying there is something wrong there too. Look at the weight of Contador and LeMond in his prime and you will see that Lemond is carry extra pounds -- dead weight in the mountains -- slows you down.

OK, so that said, I think it is probable Lance blood doped like every other cyclist in the pro circuit. He was still awesome. I also believe that LeMond has probably done his share of questionable doping, given that doping in cycling goes back decades. Hell, Eddy Merckx is fairly open about using speed. If LeMond expects me to believe for one second that he raced in the only era of clean cycling, and won three Tours, then he's sorely mistaken. I don't care. Blood doping is so complex that I'm not even that outraged by it. It's not steroids, it's essentially injecting oxygen in your blood. Lance did not win because he had the best chemist. He won because he was the best cyclist by a fairly wide margin.

Excellent post, Baloo

Remember, too, that Trek bought out Lemond cycles and essentially mothballed it, leading to a lawsuit in which Lemond blamed Armstrong (which is probably true). Those two have hated one another for years, but not sure how or why it started.
