I was too young to remember the fight when it happened but from everything I've read this was the Mayweather-Pacquiao of the 80's. Anyone here watch it live?

My father was deeply opposed to paying for any sort of television at the time, but constant lobbying by myself and two of my older brothers persuaded him to get the fight. It served as the vehicle to getting regular cable thereafter, and is one of the fond memories of my youth.

I saw it live. Hagler couldn't get off his shots and Leonard won the decision. The big four were Leonard, Hagler, Hearns and Duran and Leonard is the only one who retired having beaten the other three (he lost his first fight with Duran though).
Leonard had announced his retirement and in the ring, wearing a suit and holding a mike, pointed to Haglar in the front row, praised Hagler and said something like, "unfortunately, a fight with Hagler will never happen." Then he came out of retirement and beat Hagler.
My favorite fights though were when Leonard threw 25 straight punches and hurt Hearns before winning a TKO in the 14th and the Hagler-Hearns brawl which Hagler won in the third. Hagler could brawl, but Leonard was the best of that gereration in the Welterweight-Middleweight classes.

Bull and spittle.
Hagler was robbed blind, and was easily the best fighter of the four-- simply not the most media savvy. It's a shame, because he's a legitimate all time Middleweight champion.

I thought Hagler won (obviously did not watch it live)

Yeah, I saw it at a friend's house when I was a kid.
We all liked Leonard more by far and wanted him to win but frankly he didn't do much until late in the fight and late in each round. Pitty-patty punches that were mostly for show.
We all thought Hagler clearly won and threw real punches. Leonard tried to win by being a showman - well he did win.
At the time, I didn't understand how they judged boxing and wouldn't even more the next year with Roy Jones Jr. in Korea.
I haven't really liked boxing since.

We went to watch it on closed circut. Hagler was a huge favorite but fought a terrible fight. Ray was fantastic and won the fight. No way Hagler got robbed, not even close. He landed nothing. Ray finished every round strong if I remember correctly and easily won imo.

I am a Hagler fan...I saw most of his fights...but he couldn't get off and really hurt Leonard or take him out. I was rooting for Hagler and thought live, based on the obvious bias toward Leonard, for many reasons, that It was as if he was the champ and Hagler would have to take him out to win. Then I thought maybe a draw...but everyone was in awe of Leonard's comeback.
Leonard officially beat all three, including the rematch win over Duran. He beat Benitez, he beat the Canadian Golden Boy, he beat Kalule. He fought everyone. He even took out the Cuban for the Gold Medal.

Ray tried to steal rounds by starting the first 30 seconds strong, and finishing the last 30 seconds as strong as possible.
The fantastic misperception that Hagler didn't land anything simply is mind boggling. He outlanded Leonard in the fight, decisively so with power punches, though hitting at a lower percentage overall.

Bump.
Interesting to hear from Sugar Ray Leonard on Simmons podcast admitting "he stole the fight." That it was calculated and intentional.
Which makes sense...from his pitty-patty point punches to doing nothing until the final 30 seconds with showman flurries for the judges.

Yes, I remember Leonard, in particular, show shining the last 30 seconds of every round. Nothing with anything behind it, but enough for the judges to score the fight for him.
I thought Hagler won the fight, but Leonard really did fight a smart fight.
Haglar was a rugged beast.
