Costas did during his gun story was quote Jason Whitlock; he didn't even take a side, he was just trying to promote a discussion. People hear what they want to hear though
He used the quotation to convey his thoughts without risking his reputation

Does anyone think he's actually good at his job?
I do, actually.
FWIW,I do think he does have a large ego (but that applies to any major journalist, really) and I may disagree vehemently with his viewpoints at times, but by no means, is he bad at what he does. I respect the hell out of Bob Costas.

The only people who don't think he's good at his job are the people whose vaginas are still bleeding over his gun rant from months ago.

His politics and his desire to espouse them are a huge turn off, but that's the case with 99% of network personnel, so you have to tune it out. He's pretty good as a sportscaster, but he should leave his political views out of the conversation.

The problem with Bob Costas is he completely unable to keep his personal opinion out of his work. Anyone in Houston who was around during the 93-94 Finals between the Rockets and Knicks knows Costas' head was entirely up Ewing's arse.

Great sportscaster, but tends to perform monologues/soliloquies in order to go above the event itself. I call it Costas poetry.
It must work because he's won a ton of Emmys.

I think he does a very good job of calling games but he can be sanctimonious at times.
Some of his coworkers don't love him.I remember a feud he had with Paul McGuire. During a pre-game segement McGuire had a puppet sized foot ball uniform he said he bought for Bob.

He is one of the very few that I actually like. I think that he does the best job as an interviewer. He always asks the best questions.

Best baseball tv announcer I watched in the 90's. Most of my memories from when the Indians were good include Bob Costas.

I never really cared for him but I remember Vince McMahon owned him in a interview back in 01.

He is a douche bag that loves himself. I didn't hear what I want to hear about the gun thing, he was expressing his politics during a fricking football game because he had a platform. That being said he is great at his job.

Oh yes he did take a side. You need to listen to the audio again.
I agree that he's good at baseball.

for some reason, i still dont know why (maybe to see which country had the hottest chicks) i watched the whole london 2012 opening ceremnies and Costas seriously pissed me off.
I think it was bangladesh that was entering the arena, and Costas quips to the effect of- "and heres bangladesh, actually the largest country population wise to never have won an olympic medal competing in these olympics."
I was like, no shite costas, you fricking prick, they are the poorest country in the world. it is probably the highlight of their olympics to get to be recognized in the opening ceremony, and you have to totally shite on them.
i dont care how good that lucky mother fricker is at asking questions. and as far as baseball goes, id much rather listen to john miller and joe morgan. frick bob costas.

Costas acted like a sarcastic douche during most of the opening ceremony. There were a few other instances that stood out at the time in addition to the one you're referring to, although I can't remember them all now. He definitely mocked North Korea
