I don't understand where people are finding a grey area. The rules are clearly stated.

i guess because there is no exact measurement just as near as possible to the spot. this causes some grey area. ball comes to rest in a divot. you hit it fat in the water and make a larger divot. You decide to hit from the same spot. i guess you have to try to drop it in the divot?

I know you aren't this dense. You honestly don't see the grey in this rule? I'm not talking about the DQ or not....I'm talking to 2 stroke penalty.

curious, did tiger ever say which option he chose on the bad drop? was it the original spot option or the point it last crossed and the flag option?

He said to himself..

quote:

DAMN! That shot was money. If I move back two yards and hit the same shot, I'll knock it stiff and walk away with a bogey.

I just don't see a grey area. You either drop from your original spot, or between that spot and where the ball last crossed the water, or in the drop zone if there is one.

The ball needs to be within a clublength of where you are dropping. Unless otherwise specified by that golf club.

Why don't you quote me the rule where it says "a club length." Because I have not seen that once yet.

because it does not say a specific distance like 1 club length. it just says as near to the original spot as possible.

Because quite often the golfer will leave the area and then have to walk back to where he played his last shot from. This gives him the leeway to know that he can drop it as close to the area without penalty.

i know why it is the way it is, i am just saying there is some grey area. noonan is saying no grey area on where you can drop.

I didn't realize that you meant that.

Either way, if the player has any questions as to where to drop, he can call a rules official.

That rule - yes. All of them - no. And he probably does know that rule just got the drop options confused in the heat of the moment.
