Have to disagree. Richard Petty is in that discussion with dale for best in what they do/did.

Petty is barely top-5:

1A:Pearson
1B:Dale, Sr.
3.Gordon
4.DW
5.Petty/Jimmie Johnson

I use to photograph the Saints games back in the early 80s and in the locker room after the games, it was amazing how many players light one up.

He ran 60 races a year while everyone else ran half that b/c the Petty's had more $$$$. So Richard had a built-in advantage that the rest of the field didn't.

If Pearson and the Wood Bros.would of had the resources that the Petty's did, he'd of won 300 races and 8-10 titles. He was THAT DAMN GOOD! He was a fricking badass. Alas, the only full 3 seasons of Pearson's career, he won the title all 3 times. That is not a coincidence.

Before Winston came in, everyone did as many races as they could, not just the Pettys. Bennie Parsons won the title in the Early 70s by doing exactly that, and he was an independent.
The Wood Brothers chose to only run the big tracks with the big payouts, until Winston made it financially beneficial to run the whole schedule.

Eh, Petty still wasn't as good as Dale, Pearson, Gordon, DW, and maybe even Cale IMO.

My conspiracy theory on this is that Petty just won 200 NASCAR races by accident. If I just keep repeating that mantra, soon everyone will believe, including me.
