First games on September 4 instead of August 21.

There was a motion to keep the current calendar; it failed 8-4. The motion to delay passed unanimously.

They were afraid Atlanta Public Schools would cancel fall sports completely if they didn't delay the 2 weeks.

I still can't wrap my head around football being that early.

It's always been around that time for as long as I can remember. Full practice starting around August 1st and scrimmages starting 2-3 weeks later.

It's going to hurt the smaller schools in the winter sports more than anything.

If Georgia is deciding to delay the start of HS football season, no state will start on time.

GHSA is the SEC of high school football associations

Really interested to see how they deal with the state championship games, considering this shift puts them on December 24th, 25th, and 26th.

All this assuming it doesn't get delayed further....

If they are doing like miss, it wont matter. They will not be keeping full schedule. Just moving 2 weeks back. And losing those 2 games. Playoffs same schedule

They already said they're playing a ten game season and 5 game playoff schedule.

Not sure how GA is doing it but in MS, the 2 wk delay means the first two wks of the game schedule is canceled and everything else remains the same. If another 2wk delay is needed, they’ll lose their first 4 games. In MS, these first 4 typically are non-district games and have no bearing on state playoffs.

Glad they aren’t pushing it back into soccer, in MS.

I’m sure two weeks will make a massive difference.

No way they would play them Christmas Eve/Christmas Day.

They could, I guess, push them back a week to NYE weekend, but the Benz wouldn't be available (if the Peach Bowl is still played).

Play the games the 27th/28th/29th? Falcons are in KC on the 27th, and they can turn the stadium around pretty quickly to get ready for the Peach.

I wonder what the push back does to the Corky Kell? There were 5 games scheduled at the Benz on 8/22. If the CFA kickoff games go on as planned (which are doubtful), you have WV/FSU and UGA/UVa on 9/5 and 9/7.

I don't think they use the Mercedes-Benz Stadium for high school. Last year the championships were at Turner Field (Georgia State Stadium).

Several school systems in the Atlanta area have cancelled in-person classes throughout the fall. I really don’t know how they’re going to have fall sports.

The players and parents have the option of sports. They don't have the choice for school.

No in person classes = no sports. No other way to do this.

A field turf field at 7:30 on an August Friday night is probably the safest place to be during this whole pandemic.

No way in hell could a virus survive those hellacious conditions.

Extracurricular are optional. Going to school is not. You can have it both ways.

I just don’t see that working, anywhere. You either attend school and have sports...or you do not attend school. Sports ARE at school. Coaches ARE teachers.

You could do school at 50% capacity, day on, day off and still have sports, but you can’t do no school and still open the campus and everything it takes for teachers to support athletics.

The difference is sports are voluntary as is coaching. The parents and coaches have a choice in the matter. If you got back f2f for school then there is no choice for those who are not comfortable with it.

Further information as I sat in on a GHSA officials meeting last night. I run the play clock or game clock as needed.

The season is 10 games and 5 rounds of playoffs (which is normal). The finals will be played between Dec 28 and 30 at Georgia State Stadium (Turner Field), so MBS availability is irrelevant.

This schedule allows for a full season and two bye weeks. The Corky Kell games are on and will be played the week of August 31. They literally took everyone's schedule and pushed it back 2 weeks.
