Gerard Anthony Faust

He served as the head football coach at the University of Notre Dame from 1981 to 1985 and at the University of Akron from 1986 to 1994,[1] compiling a career college football record of 73–79–4.[1] From 1962 to 1980, Faust was the head football coach at Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he tallied a mark of 178–23–2 and won four mythical High School Football National Championships. Before coaching, Faust enjoyed a successful stint as a quarterback at the University of Dayton, where he played under former Notre Dame coach Hugh Devore.[2] Faust was offered a partial scholarship to Notre Dame, but enrolled at Dayton, where he graduated in 1958.[2]

Going 178-23-2 at Moeller is pretty fricking impressive. Moeller is also a Catholic high school, so the religious connection is there as well. Cinci private schools are no joke.

Only if the action is to keep the best ND recruiting class of most of our lifetimes together, then yes, they were quite affirnitive in their actions.

I think he was obviously the move thag had to be made. They couldn't wait around for Fickel or the program would have come apart.

Brian Kelly leaving has brought most of the Notre Dame fan base back together 90 percent for sure. Brian Kelly's biggest issue is he does not remove bad coaches. Takes him forever. Freeman is set up and changing a couple coaches on the staff. We are very happy you all took Kelly from us. Think what you all want. Coaching matters.

The only coach to keep ND semi relevant in my lifetime and you’re happy he is leaving?

The OC chose to stay at ND with Freeman as did the DL coach. That seems to indicate unification with Freeman. That seems integral to me. Now, suppose the cards fall in ND's favor for them to get into the playoffs and they manage to win it all...

I get your argument. But reality is, BK has been there for a decade and built the ND program, got them to multiple CFP appearances and a natty appearance. If they get into the CFP this year it won’t be because MF got them there, it’s because BKs program did.

Don’t get me wrong if, MF holds the wheel and wins the natty somehow, that is hard and most definitely an accomplishment. But has he proven he can run a program of that magnitude? Has he proven he can make hires and recruit other than defensive players? No he hasn’t. It’s very risky for ND to assume he can, but again it might work out.

Exactly if Freeman doesn’t work out then that’s a problem to fix another day. The ND alum, coaches, players, fans and administration have all rallied around Freeman and have created momentum out of despair. Now compare them to OU.

Lincoln Riley, Jimbo Fisher, and Kirby Smart are just a few names that come to mind of coordinators taking over big programs with no head coaching experience

If they have hired the guy, it's not because of an impending signing class. It's his body of work and their wanting continuity.

You should have read ND’s 247 board before the report / formal announcement. All those dudes could talk about was promoting Marcus Freeman to hold ‘22 and ‘23 together. If he wasn’t promoted, he was gone + legitimate worry it would send the program in a tailspin with decommits and transfers.

This hire was a good bandaid for the short-term, but… that’s it. No one has a damn clue how it’ll work out long-term.

Two of which had world's more experience as top assistants in big programs. The other kept the train on the tracks for 4-5 years then ran away.

In all likelihood, Lincoln Riley is an exception to the rule, but even he had a couple years as an OC at Oklahoma before taking over. Jimbo Fisher and Kirby Smart were coordinators for several years (or more) at big programs before getting their shot.

Marcus Freeman has had one year of coordinator experience at a big school.

It's a tough first head coaching job but he's a great young coordinator. We'll see if it works

Exactly. It’s not ideal for ND but timing and situation often dictate. Freeman has a blueprint to follow for the time being and staff/admin that know the ropes. I applaud ND for not being scared to hire him and trusting what’s in place.

Ryan Day, Dabo Swinney, Lincoln Riley, Mack Brown, and David Shaw are all on Freeman's schedule next season.

This was a media play. For the last 3 days, they've been universally calling it all but a done deal and praising it as the greatest move ND could possibly do. Michael Smith said on tv yesterday Marcus Freeman would win an NC before BK does.

Yes. ND made a football hire just for a few days of good press.
