What does it mean when a team puts a player on a franchise tag(e.g. The Pat's are putting a franchise tag on Matt Cassel)

player is still a free agent and can sign with a different club. if he does, that club will be penalized 2, 1st round draft picks

if no other team signs him (which hasn't been done in years), the team who tags the guy has to pay him a salary averaging the top 5 salaries at that position (you can find charts online)

this greatly limits the ability of this player to move in free agency. often teams tag a player to force a trade with the team who wants to sign him (obviously for less than 2, 1st round picks)

If the franchsie tag is applied in order to keep the player, the club has to then pay them a minimum of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of April 16, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater.

You missed one option

quote:

An "exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount equal to or greater than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of a date in April of the current year in which the tag will apply, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. Exclusive franchise players cannot negotiate with other teams.

Namdi was the only player to get this tag last year.

Speaking of Cassel....

quote:

That would mean the Patriots would have about $29 million in salary cap space tied up in two quarterbacks, with Brady earning almost $15 million and Cassel guaranteed over $14 million.

Are you fricking kidding me? cassel makes 14 million a year as a backup???

I am confused. Are you asking if he does make that now? That is what he would make if they don't trade him and keep him on the roster next year. But he has made probably close to league minimum before now though.

Seems crazy but that's how a franchise tag works. That's about $1m less than Brady gets a year.

Pats are smart to put an unrestricted or non-exclusive tag on Cassel. They almost have to, can't go into the season without your #1 or #2 QB. Teams can place the franchise tag on players from Feb. 5 to Feb. 19 and the start of free agency begins on Feb. 27.

Its to protect the player, If you are gonna let the teams restrict the player, they make sure the guy is gonna be one of the top paid guys at his position.

On the same topic, is the salary of a player on IR counted against the salary cap? It seems like that salary wouldn't count. If it doesn't count, then the Pats won't have to pay Cassel and Brady, too if Brady isn't back next year. Also, the franchise deal is a year at a time, so they could make a different decision when Brady is finally back.

Well they don't franchise the same player twice in a row in most cases, but it does happen. But they can't change their decision, say in July, once they find out Brady is healthy. Basically the Pats are buying a 14 million dollar insurance policy for the 09 season.

Now if they franchise him, and in July they find out Brady is 100% healthy, then they can trade him to another team if they want, and not necessarily for 2 1st rounders.
