It happened last year in one of the races where there were a lot of retirements. Raikkonen was a lap down and allowed to unlap himself, ended up finishing in the points. Pretty sure he passed russell for 10th near the very end.

We are setup for a great season. Max Vs Lewis for the title and then you’ve got a real battle for 3rd between for both drivers and the constructors cup.

We can use this race. Hamilton would be the 4th person in line despite him being 8th (I think).
If they go to restart it would allow the front of the pack to get away while showing Hamilton (and the other backmarkers) blue flags before turn one. It is safety as well as sport.
Use a hypothetical scenario, Hamilton had just passed a chain of backmarkers to put 5 cars between himself and 2nd place. Red flag (or caution) comes out. How far could Hamilton get out front before 2nd place has cleared those 5 backmarkers? 2nd place would lose much more time than they were before the red flag.
Note that this usually happens, but not always. The race director could see that the caution isn't going to last long enough for the backmarkers to catch back up with the field so he won't allow them to unlap.

Mclaren looks really bad now for how that relationship went down.
