Ya, he was catching the car in front of him.

But I guess they broke the latch or something off the belt.

What do you mean? The reason for him having to PIT?

No, I get he took the belts off, but this quote from the espn article makes it sound like he broke it as well.

Maybe the middle part.

quote:

Leclerc told them they needed a new attachment for the belt but the team did not have one ready when he returned to the pit-lane, at which point the decision was made to switch off the engine retire the car.

Williams sold to US investment group....

quote:

It’s the dawn of a new era for Williams after the Formula 1 team announced they have been acquired by American investment firm Dorilton Capital… The iconic British constructor, founded by Sir Frank Williams and Sir Patrick Head, said in May that they were embarking on a “new strategic direction”, and had begun talks with interested parties regarding a sale of a minority or majority stake in the company. On Friday, nearly three months after they made that news public, the team said Dorilton Capital would be their new owners, marking “the beginning of an exciting new era in the history of Williams” with the team “now well positioned to capitalise upon the seeping rule changes coming into Formula 1 with the new Concorde Agreement” for 2021.

Hope it works out for them. I'm sure they did their due diligence in making sure the name and culture doesn't change over time. Would be great to see them back near the front.

The US now has two teams that come in dead last consistently.

I hope Williams can remain British, what else does Dorilton own?

Not sure but just found out that my father in law works on floor below them and knows a few of the higher ups. See if I can work some US/Canadian GP passes out of them!

Seems weird that an "investment firm" bought them, those guys are normally looking to turn profits, all I've ever heard is how F1 is a huge money pit. Hope they're willing to put the money in to the team to make them relevant again.

There is a lot of money to be accessed via F1.

They will turn a profit when they sell them.

Williams has a ton of technology as well. Williams Advanced Engineering in the past had provided all the Formula E batteries and other listed components to Formula 1 teams.

Did they buy that part though? I read the thing at like 530am, but I thought they just bought the f1 team not the whole business.

An F1 team seems like a vanity project. I’m grateful someone stepped in, but it can’t be a good investment. Or at least, there are any number of much better investments out there.

Williams GP Holdings only has a minority stake in WAE. They sold their majority stake in 2019.

This isn’t a good deal sometimes. These firms tend to saddle their side projects with debt and then bankrupt them.

The only hope is that with the new spending caps in place and supposedly better revenue distribution, with the newest concorde agreement, that the smaller teams will not be losers like they were.

Merc, RB, and Ferrari can still outspend, but they won't be that far out of scale if Williams decides to stay about where they are.
