In. Can't wait for the new season. Yeah, we already have a pretty good clue how the season will play out but the drama between the drivers helps assuage that. Plus, Hamilton seems like a genuinely good person so I find it hard to root against him.

We all know that Ferrari will find a way to feuck up several races with poorly timed pit stops or by backing the wrong driver on a particular day. It's Ferrari, after all. If they had the decision making of the Mercedes team they'd have won a race or two more last year.

It may not matter. Unless they're sandbagging, their car looks legitimately slow right now. Aaaand Vettel had an engine failure today.

So I know it's just testing but it looks like the fastest laps have been in the low 1:17 mark for pretty much everyone, Hamilton posted a 1:16.96 on Wednesday, and a 1:16.5 today, and Bottas comes in with a 1:15.7. Without reading too much into this as it's testing am I overreacting when I see this and figure Mercedes will run away with it again this year? I feel like this is Mercedes telling everyone to just pack up and go home.

To make any meaningful sense out of those times you also have to know what tires they were on. All 5 compounds are available for testing and there is a vast difference between C1 and C5. For example, Ocon was a second and a half back from Bottas but he was on C4 while Bottas was on C5.

Sad that as a Ferrari fan, we are already being prepped for a non-competitive season...

Based on reddit it seems like the argument for DAS being legal is that it is not a change to the suspension, but rather a steering input no different than turning the wheel.

Exactly. It isn't powered either. It is direct input from the driver.

No one will do a direct challenge until after qualifying week 1. There will be a lot of questions asked to clarify before then.

Not sure how Merc passed all the preseason tests with steering column and crash test if the FIA disagreed.

Even moreso it seems the FIA has known for a while about what Mercedes was doing and they already bought off on the system.

F1 teams may take legal action against FIA over Ferrari settlement

quote:

Seven Formula 1 teams could take legal action against the FIA to ensure that the truth about its investigation into Ferrari's 2019 engine is released.

In a joint statement issued by the non-Ferrari powered teams, they mentioned that they were 'shocked' and 'surprised' by the governing body's decision to reach a secret agreement with the Maranello-based team over its power unit.

Wow, so Ferrari was caught, not punished, and I guess they promised not to do it anymore! Wild.

(side question) Anyone have any suggestions for F1 forums?

Formula 1 subreddit is good for keeping on top of major stories, etc. The discussion on there tends to not be great though

Not a Ferrari defender, but they basically asked for immunity before revealing what they did to FIA.

FIA knew they were circumventing the rules, but couldn't find out how. Not sure they would have been found out if they didn't reveal it themselves.

Yeah, Ferrari appeared to beat the rules, but that is the game. FIA wanted to close the loophole and now the other teams want to know what the loophole was so they can exploit it.

Did I make this up, or was the idea that they were sacrificing oil into the fuel to have more fuel to burn??

Merc had been doing it for years until the other teams caught on. The FIA regulated it.

The theories last year went from they were flowing fuel when the flowmeters weren't looking, they found a gap in the monitoring. Also, there was a thought they had a combustion fluid as a cooling medium and were leaking it in, which is a blatant rules violation.

Do you guys want this to be the season long F1 thread? I can change the title and edit the OP to reflect that.

Here are the tire choices for Melbourne:

I don't see the problem with it.

Can we talk about Drive to Survive Season 2? I was pretty bummed they didn't go into the Rich Energy/Haas shitshow more. They basically portrayed it as Rich dropped them for sucking, which is partly true but leaving out all the shitposting by the CEO was doing that disaster a disservice.

Same goes for the LeClerc/Vettel contact in Brazil, that was probably the worst moment in their whole feud and it was barely grazed over.

I’m enjoying season 2. About halfway through it and I’m enjoying getting to know some personalities that they didn’t get to last year. I’m glad Mercedes took the lid off and allowed Hamilton to be interviewed this time.

Best they could have done. Anyone who knows of Rich Energy knows what that was all about anyway.

I’m still a new fan to F1 so it’s been rough getting my head around the lack of parity between teams. I really enjoy the different variables that teams use but it’s a lot of information sometimes.

Ditto - gotten into it the last few years and really enjoy it but good heavens the dominance at the top is frustrating as a fan. Would it kill them to have Haas or Williams regularly battling for podiums instead of knowing that they have virtually no shot of finishing better than 4th coming into the year?

It might be incongruous with the first paragraph, but I love the business/branding/management side of the sport, though. Nothing else quite like it in sports.
