I don't really disagree that using that disparaging of a term over a hairstyle you dont like to be out of line and potentially racist in the eyes of others. "Thug" should be reserved for a predatory abusive person, not someone with a haircut you don't like.
Some of the kindest people I've ever met had dreadlocks. The farthest thing from a thug possible.

Per the quote, the coach asked the guy to cut his hair and the player thought that was racist. The coach didn’t call him a thug.

Great, instead he admitted to them that the image of a thug in his head is a young black man with dreads doing nothing suspicious. Shocking that they might find that racist.
