Why didn't you call it "most innovative" instead of "best"?

Because that's not the only thing we're looking at here. Otherwise Chip Kelly would be in the mix. This is about the total package.

How does Vince Lombardi not make the top 5?

Similar to the reasons Bear and Saban aren't. Although i believe Lombardi was the first coach to have pictures taken in game from the top of the stadium then brought down to the field to be analyzed, which is why i put him in my honorable mentions.

Neither has Bill Belichick. And if the OP is ranking coaches by influence, how does Walter Camp not make the top 5? The guy created the line of scrimmage, forward pass, offensive signal calling, system of downs, etc....

No Paul Dietzel? He's > Miles and even fits the "innovator" category.

It's interesting that all three of LSU's NC coaches have an Ohio connection.

Well #1 Brown and Walsh developed it together & Brown gave Walsh great deference, much more than any other assistant

#2 Walsh didn't just take the playbook with him to San Francisco, plug it in, and just start reeling off Super Bowls. He heavily modified the system he and Brown had developed

Paul Brown had Walsh help him tweak an Offense that he had invented & ran for decades before . Otto Graham is the only QB before 1980 to crack the top 25 passer rating all time because of Browns Ohio River O.

Walsh learned the Offense( Ohio River O) that Brown 'invented' years before & 'helped' Brown tweak it at Browns behest.

Because the original invention is modified( with help from the originator ) then it's no longer the the creators invention?

I'll defer to Bill Bellichick's assessment. And you know that he doesn't mean Walsh simply lifted Browns playbook.

It asks for top 5, not honorable mentions or top 10.

The op wants 5, people constantly give "well he isn't top 5 but at least deserves a mention". Bull, if he's not top 5 he doesn't deserve a mention in top 5.

I'm done now, thanks for listening.

In 10-15 years when he finally calls it quits, Saban will be on this list.

What Saban has done at the college level is nothing short of amazing, but a huge part of it comes from his unparalleled recruiting. Saban is a very good in-game coach, but not the best of the best by any stretch. Without the #1 recruiting class every year he would not have anywhere near the dynasty that he has right now. And he was a total flop at the professional level. I think at the very least Saban needs to succeed in the NFL to have any remote claim at top 5 best coaches.

Bill Walsh can't develop or invent something that Paul Brown had already invented & won championships with years before .

Walsh was a Sid Gillman disciple of the big vertical passing game until he arrives in Cinncinnati & was taught the short passing Ohio River O by Paul Brown.

Coaches run modified versions of the Triple Option , Read Option so called West Coast Offense ( Ohio River O),etc.....but it doesn't mean they 'invented' it.
