Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin met with a handful of influential boosters Tuesday, and was told continuing financial support depends on new direction within the football program, three people with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.

The people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect the ongoing process, said embattled Florida coach Billy Napier could be fired as soon as this weekend. One thing is certain: Napier won't survive another loss.

Stricklin declined comment for this story.

This, unlike other speculation about Napier's job status, is an important and direct connection to last year's near firing of Napier. It was then that the same Florida boosters were ready to pay Napier's large buyout, but were held off by Stricklin and convinced to use that money in NIL space to help Napier's buildout

The boosters agreed, and the result was a significantly upgraded and talented team. Florida flipped five-star wide receiver Dallas Wilson – the most talented player on the team – from Oregon late in the recruiting process with the infusion of NIL cash.

They could definitely lose to Miss State.

Even if he wins, they probably get rid of him after a 5-7 or 6-6 season

Let's not be hasty here, I think he just needs a few more years to get the right people in place.

What is up with his complete refusal to give up offensive play calling? Even bitch arse Mike Norvell gave it up to try and save his job.

There’s no reason to hold off on firing him. At 3 losses, you’re out of the playoff. Get a head start on your next coach.

The deal was also done last year and they fricked around and couldn’t justifiably fire him as they finished strong. They should have fired him after last year’s Texas beatdown instead of letting him win the next 4

A bye week after this Saturday to stabilize things for the interim makes sense in terms of timing but they might as well have done it on Sunday after the A&M loss instead of after a likely win over State this week. It’s not like they needed this week to get everyone lined up, they have been

That said, UF will botch this search horribly anyway so how they fire him is fairly moot

Now they still have to pay the buy out ( a few million less than last year) but wasted all that money they supposedly saved into nil for a team with 4 losses halfway in the season

Stricklin put out his vote of confidence statement a few days before that game. They weren’t firing him before they turned it around. He could’ve lost out and he still would’ve been back.

Equally as stupid. There were 3 regular season games to go

And as long as he’s there the SEC will rejoice

Didn't stricklin just get a big extension and there is no president to fire him?

You are GOSH DARN RIGHT(!!!!!!!!) that they finished strong!

They beat a mighty Tulane team playing their "2nd string quarterback" who was trying to put out good tape so he could transfer, even though he couldn't beat out the guy who only had one division one offer and now said "2nd string starting qb" is a tight end who has yet to see the field because of "injury" (I believe had surgery and may probably red shirt so he can transfer).

And baw....this isn't a knock at you....or the Florida Gators..... but to my team....
