Who is the team that has the best chance to make their first playoff appearance?

For me...

Wisconsin.
They play 2 teams with a pulse. The first on opening weekend against Penn State. The second being Notre Dame.

They return 7 starters on offense. 8 starters on defense. They had a top 10 defense in the country last year.

They play only 4 away games. Illinois, Rutgers, Purdue, and Minnesota.

Notre Dame is on their schedule, but ND lost tons of starters, including their QB.

They avoid Ohio State and Indiana in the regular season.

Expect Wisconsin to be undefeated going into the Big 10 Champioship game.

Iowa State.

I doubt it, just a guess.

PAC 12 blows. Even if Sconnie is as good as your post, they might, they’ll get smoked by OSU in the conference championship. ACC and SEC will be a school that’s already been there. Iowa State can beat whatever school they face in a one off Big XII championship game.

UNC

Good choice. They avoid Clemson on the schedule.

Texas A&M

They'd have to beat Bama, so unlikely just because of that.

Cincinnati

13-0 with a signature win at Notre Dame would probably get them in. I just don't think they can do it.

Iowa St.

Solid choice.

No chance.

Don’t forget about Iowa. I don’t know much about them, but they are ranked above Penn St, and right behind Indiana in both preseason polls. Plus, they have an open date before Wisconsin.

Anybody in the Big 10 not named Ohio State. And Michigan State of course.

This would be a fine breakdown if Wisconsin had Alabama or Ohio State level talent. They don’t have anywhere close to that though, so Iowa, Northwestern, Minnesota and Michigan are all capable of beating them. Iowa smoked them just last year.

They’d actually be my pick. They avoid Oregon and Washington. Their only tough OOC game is against Notre Dame who should drop off this year.

In the ACC, you have to get through Clemson.
In the Big XII, you have to get through Oklahoma.
In the B1G, Ohio State.
In the SEC, Alabama and Georgia.
G5’s have no shot even if Cincinnati runs the table.

USC sneaking in as an overrated one loss team seems more likely to me than UNC, Wisconsin or Iowa State winning their conference title against much more talented teams. Utah almost made the playoff just a couple years ago playing in that weak league.

So you’re unfamiliar with the annual Badger letdown.

Until we can beat OSU it won't matter if we go 12-0/11-1

Cincinnati plays Indiana as well. Both Indiana and Notre Dame on the road. Plus they are starting in the top 10. An undefeated season 10000% gets them in.

I guess Michigan, Army, Purdue, Iowa, Northwestern, and Minnesota don't have pulses.

Graham Mertz was one of the top QBs in the 2019 class. Of course, he spent three weeks in COVID protocol last season, was without his two best receivers (leading WR was a 5-foot-8 walk-on), and didn't have spring/fall camp. Not ideal for your first season as starter.

A lot to prove, but has a live arm and should be better this season. How much better? Remains to be seen, but does get his two receivers back + Jake Ferguson remains one of the best TEs in the B1G.

Last year was brutal for Wisconsin. Spent most of the season not knowing if they'd play each week. Just a throwaway season with injuries and full-fledged COVID outbreaks, including the coaching staff. Is what it is. I think most everyone has moved on.

Fully-expect the Badgers to get back to 10+ wins. Will be in the CFP conversation leading up to the B1G Championship Game, as they have multiple times, but it won't matter if they can't beat Ohio State... which they won't.

Yep, likely.

I don't think Indiana will be a quality win by the end of the season, though.

It’ll be the same 4-6 teams over and over for the rest of time.
