The NCAA released the FCS playoffs bracket yesterday for the 2023 Division I Football Championship. No surprise that the defending champions, South Dakota State, are the top seed in this year’s bracket. The Jackrabbits are riding a 25-game win streak and are unbeaten on the season.
National Seeds
1. South Dakota State
2. Montana
3. South Dakota
4. Idaho
5. Albany
6. Montana State
7. Furman
8. Villanova
The bracket is comprised of 10 automatic qualifiers and 14 at-large teams. At-large teams are selected by a committee which also sets the National seeds have first round byes. Three teams are making their first appearance in the playoffs: Drake, Mercer & North Carolina Central. First round games are this Saturday.
Conferences with Multiple Teams
• Missouri Valley Football Conference - 6
• Big Sky Conference - 4
• Colonial Athletic Association - 4
• Southern Conference - 3

Had no idea they expanded from 16 to 24 teams

The championship game will feature a team from the Dakotas defeating a team from the Dakotas, or possibly Montana.

Yeah, it’s been 24 teams since 2013. Hasn’t mattered much with NDSU’s dominance, though.
North Dakota State is playing in the first round of the playoffs for the first time since 2010, their first appearance in the FCS playoffs (excluding the 2020 playoffs which were a smaller bracket and played in spring 2021).

They lost 3 games this season….all to the 3 other teams from the Dakotas.

Colonels have the best chance at round 3 that they ever have.
Last two times they've been forced into a meat grinder second round.
I believe they have the 3rd toughest fcs schedule going in as well

I’m going to sound like a homer, but we got fricked with having to travel in the first round. Nicholls are a conference champion, swept the conference, and have to go on the road to play a team with the same number of losses and finished SEVENTH in their conference standings. frick the committee.
I get that the Southland was mostly garbage this season and that the committee doesn’t respect it at all (hence UIW missing the playoffs), but a conference winner going to a 7th place team is stupid. SIU had a 3-point win over FBS Northern Illinois in the 2nd week of the season. The committee has always placed a high value in those games regardless of the quality of the FBS team, though. And SIU beat SEMO by a point in week 3. The Colonels blew their lead and lost a non-conference game to SEMO a few weeks back. I’m sure those are the justifications from the committee. But I still think we got hosed.

I hope so! But the Idaho Vandals are really good this season.

From what I gather, Nicholls did not bid to host the playoff game like we did a few years ago, which is why we are going on the road.

Sad if true. But I can believe it with the way the NCAA handles the bids and game revenues. I’d guess the LSU game being in BR on Saturday morning factored into that decision.

It’s stunning to not see North Dakota st as a top 8 seed.

I enjoy solid FCS. Wish the lower quarter of FBS went back.

Fun fact. The 4 Dakota teams are a combined 28-1 against non-Dakota FCS teams. Only FCS loss was North Dakota to Northern Iowa.
So they put three Dakota teams in one quadrant, USD, NDSU, and UND along with Montana State and Sacramento State. It's the Group of Death and by far the toughest path.

And I have little doubt they’ll win their quad. It’s SDSU’s to lose, but still feel NDSU is 2nd best team.
Pretty much slept walked through some of those games I think.

You do know South Dakota and North Dakota both beat NDSU rather handily this year.
I don't think NDSU gets through Bozeman and Montana St takes them out.

FCS is about to demonstrate - once again - why a 12 team playoff is absurd. No matter how they've changed the FCS playoff, once TV coverage expanded and the internet came along, it got easier and easier to evaluate teams. The seed of the eventual winner has gotten lower over time.
In the last 14 years, the highest seed to win is 5. Happened once. In 11 of the last 14 years the winner was seeded either #1 or #2.
Despite all the teams and all the rounds, #1 or #2 comes out on top 79% of the time and 13 of 14 are from the top 4, that's 93% of the time. In the past 12 years, every champion came from a top 4 seed.
The idea of a 12 team playoff in FBS is absurd. It's even easier to evaluate teams in FBS because of more exposure.
