With all of the talk about conference realignment and teams jumping from historical geographical conference affiliations, what are your thoughts about this type of relegation idea:

SEC - Conference USA
ACC - Sun Belt
Big 10 - MAC
Pac 12 - MWC
Big 12 - American

The last place team over a 2 year stretch from one of the P5 conferences is relegated to their partner G5 conference, while the top team in that same time period from the G5 conference moves up to the P5 partner.

I love the idea of relegation with pro sports but college is different. It is tough to do with recruiting and early draft entries. College teams can't really choose their roster or just pay more money for better players (A&M excluded). It would be tough to a school to recruit after being relegated.

Besides the whole payroll aspect, college football (and basketball to some extent) are more like pro sports these days than they were 5-10 years ago. With the transfer portal and NIL availability, changing a roster year over year isn't as difficult as it used to be, so a team like Buffalo being promoted to the Big 10 would be able to attract higher caliber transfers than they typically would be able to attract.

The teams getting bumped will never compete and the teams getting dropped will never recover. Stupid

I doubt it, and what does it really matter.

the same teams will remain near the top as always, no different than all the professional soccer league in Europe right now.
4 teams have one La Liga this century, with Madrid and Barcelona making up 17 of the 21
5 teams have one the Bundesliga this century, with Bayern Munich winning the last 10 and 16 in total.
PSG has won 10 of the last 12 Ligue 1 titles. Lyon won 7 in a row in the early 2000's.
The last time someone other than Inter, AC Milan, or Juventus won Serie A was 1992.
there's more parity in the Premier League, but it's still always the main 5 teams finishing near the top every year in Man City, ManU, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal.

The reason its like that for soccer is b/c those are the teams with the money. How's that any different than what college football is and has been for quite some time? You either have the money to compete or you don't, and if you don't, you likely are never going to be able to get to that point to compete. The same teams have been winning the SEC for the last 30 years. I mean you've only had 7 instances out of 60 where the team in the championship game isn't one of the big 6 schools.

Doesn't mean it isn't fun for a team like ULL or Boise St or Cincy or UCF to play in a P5 conference for a year or so. Maybe ULL moves to the SEC and contracts are written for Napier to stay there and make more money as long as he stays in the SEC.

It’d be entertaining, but it’ll never happen.

No power conference team would agree to it.

While relegation would give more meaning to games for lower tier schools, allowing teams to work their way up and down, I think it would be bad for the sport. What sells college football is its regionalism and traditional rivalries, two things that relegation would likely endanger.

Is 2 years really enough to build a G5 program into one that will compete with a P5 program? Won’t we just be sending them back down every two years?

Two things that will likely be dead and gone within 20 years.
