FanGraphs Releases Annual "Industry Consensus" MLB Trade Value Rankings: 1-50

For those new to the series, it marks an attempt to answer the question “Who would bring back the most in trade if he were put on the market before the deadline?” What’s notable about this list — as opposed to the prospect types I assemble with Eric Longenhagen — is that it’s the only one for which my opinion doesn’t matter. The goal here isn’t for me to project anybody’s future value but rather to capture the opinions of the industry and how they value players in reality, right now.

It was a good read. Jose Ramirez's trajectory over the past few years has been pretty crazy. It still seems like most people probably don't realize how good he is.

I would flip one and four. Also surprised Kyle tucker is on the list.

Trout is making like 30 million dollars now. I assume that's why hes no longer #1

Trout is clearly the best player in the game but you only have him for 2.5 more years vs. 5.5 more for Ramirez.

No Bryce Harper in the top 50?
Posted on 7/20/18 at 10:15 pm to Drewbie
Harper has half a year left on his contract and will command a gigantic contract in free agency. He'd have been in the top 5 if you made this list two years ago.

He only has half a year of control left. Mike Trout might not even make the top 50 if he only had that amount of control left.

The guy that wrote the piece has major industry contacts and passed multiple versions of the list around before coming to this final version. I'm sure with retrospect, parts of this list will look silly, but I doubt anything is too crazy right now.

Also, I think Cleveland will try and trade one of these two in the next 3 years. They know they won't be able to resign them both and their window is going to shut fast. They'll lose at least two of Miller, Brantley, and Bauer within the next 2 years and they aren't set up as well long term as Houston, NYY, or Boston. Their window was 2016 through this year, IMO. If they don't win the World Series this year, they won't win one with this core.

Albies and Chapman both with 5.5+ WAR in their first ~full season (Chapman a couple games more and Albies a handful of games less) and both are controlled through 2023.
5-6 WAR position players with 5.5 years left of control belong in the top 20.
Suarez is signed long term below market value and is a top 5 3B bat. Think he belongs at least there.
Agree on Springer and Sanchez being too high. Turner, Freeman, Syndergaard seem a little high to me as well.

What does nolan arenado's contract situation look like? He seems to be a notable omission to me.

1.5 years left. And he will be pushing 20 million in his late year of arbitration

The fact that he has Matt Chapman 17 but no arenado at all, Altuve 36 behind someone like Albies and Suarez is laughable to name a few.
Mitch Haniger & Hoskins at 33-34 lol

FA after next year. Rendon and Goldschmidt in the same boat.

Chapman's contract is way better, and I bet if they switched parks, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.
