It's ALL about the geography of your youth.

Disagree x1000.

I grew up a Saints fan and will always be a Saints fan. Living in San Fran 50 years will NEVER make me a 49er fan!

I think you misunderstood my point. Again, sorry if I wasn't clear.

I just don't get why people have all these 'rules' as to who you can or cannot root for. Sports is for entertainment and some players/teams entertain better than others.
So much of a fan's identity is tied to his or her team...I don't think Geography obviously is the end all be all, but imho you better have a pretty goddamned good reason for the teams you support...otherwise you might as well be a girl picking teams based on uniform colour

Yes, if you have no connection to LA other than you thought it was cool to pull for them as a kid.

20+ years of pulling for a team is my connection to them.

+1000 I am from Nebraska, but live in Iowa City, and I will never be an Iowa fan. I'll root for them over most teams, but next year we are rivals so that is out the window. Root for whoever you want, but stay true to your team(s)

College is a bit different dynamic in my view, which is why I limited the OP to pro teams.

In college, where you went to undergrad and got a degree should trump all. If you didn't go to college, it should be who you pulled for growing up (normally either connected to where your parents went to school or where you grew up).

I sort of understand pulling a pro sports team out of thin air and declaring them "your" team. I can't understand how one does this for college teams, AT ALL.

I think another factor people fail to consider is the teams of their parents if they are not fans of the hometown team. My dad has liked teams for decades and I adopted them at six or seven, which is when I first considered myself to be cognitively aware of sports. At that age, I had no connection to Atlanta sports since I did not really know about rooting for the hometown team and because I already had my dad's teams that he religiously followed by the time that the local teams were introduced. I would assume I would root for all the Atlanta teams if my parents did not care about sports or obviously if those were my dad's teams. However, I find it strange to pick a team outside of the hometown team (barring special circumstances) after your malleable age of irrationally selecting teams is up. Say, if I started liking random teams in middle school or later.

Just my take, I have no contempt for "bandwagon" fans. It should not bother anyone either if someone is not a "loyal fan".

You certainly can, but I think you're missing out on one of the real benefits of sports.

Sports fandom is tribalism (in a healthy way). By constantly jumping from team to team, you never build strong emotional attachments to teams or your tribe. You will always be an outsider. without suffering, the joy is not is great. I don't think I would have enjoyed LSU's national title as much without the Hallman years. It was an emotional release, 20 years in the making.

People can root however they want, there are no rules. but it doesn't mean the rest of us in our tribes have to respect it. You're a disgraced ronin fan.

I will definitely agree with that. See it all the time around here, as there aren't pro teams in Iowa/Nebraska. I'm a Royal fan solely because my dad is and Omaha has the minor team. Basketball and foosball is another story. I root for teams that are close to me, such as the Chiefs and Bulls. However, Chicago kids in IC are slowly starting to ruin Chicago teams for me...I just hate seeing Iowa kids root for the damn Heat/Lakers for no reason. Same kids that change teams around playoff time every year.

What I want to know is, do you agree with my opinion that (especially in regard to professional sports) geography should trump all? If you live in or within an hour's drive of a city, if you consider that city home, and it has a professional team in a particular sport, that team pretty much has to be your team. To claim anything else is pretty lame.
Disagree. There are a lot of different factors that come into play with why people like certain teams. They should all be equally weighed. Just because someone lives here, doesn't mean they should consider the Saints their team over any other team.

That's sort of my point. In the grand scheme of things, fandom is generally a boorish quality that people hold onto and hoist it onto a mantle while extolling its virtue as something noble.

Ehh, My family is from New York, but I lived the majority of my life in TN. So I was a Giants, Knicks, Rangers fan growing up. But I never really felt a real attachment to those franchises, and I focused much more heavily on college athletics.

When Tennessee got the NBA, NFL, and NHL it was easy for me to make the switch.

Agree or disagree?

disagree. i grew up in Shreveport and most people there are Rangers or Astros fans. my father worked for the San Francisco Giants organization for about 10 years when I was a kid and I've been a Giants fan since.

Basically, there's much more to life than sports and to act as if its a noble endeavor when clearly the men and women running it are anything but noble does yourself a diservice. Until you open up and accept that, fandom is just like Plato's Cave.
