So Gasley might have the 4th fastest car but is having to start from the back. Could make things interesting.

Gasly gonna have the fastest lap in Q1
Sainz up in 5th is impressive, almost 5 tenths faster than Lando

Anyone watching on the ESPN app? I can't get it to work, keeps saying it needs to re-authenticate.

Can’t wait to see Bottas get smoked off the line by Lewis tomorrow

Merc is just playing with the other teams at this point.
RoBottas swings a big one. Think him being in front of Hamilton allowed him those 5 tenths.
Great to see Force Stroll perfoming good at Baku.
Kvyat's biggest competition is going to be Verstappen. No way Max let's him into that #2 seat.

Hopefully both can get a decent start. They have yet to both get off the line together.

For real dough, how expensive is it when one of these cars crashes? Man.

Obviously depends on what is damaged.
There was a totalizer someone was doing to keep track of how much the teams were out.
Found the pic of the "World Destructors Championship"
This doesn't take into account think like a $20k sensor being broke on the Williams car yesterday. Also not these prices are not known, and there is probably R&D costs in them.

Speaking of money, I saw this article about the value each driver has brought to their teams:
Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel Is F1's Top Prize Money Winner With $500 Million Haul
But the part the caught my eye was how the payouts were structured:
So the strong, well-funded teams are made even stronger with extra bonuses (the CCB, "guaranteed regardless of the teams’ race results"). And Ferrari gets their extra-special bonus just for being Ferrari.
The cards are stacked so the strong well-funded teams can maintain their advantage, and it makes it that much tougher for new teams to compete (most fold within a couple of years). Haas is showing that it can be done with the new rules allowing more parts to be bought from others, but the fact that they can get their chassis from Dallara seems to go against the spirit of F1, which is that each team designs and builds their own car. But that's another discussion.
The last takeaway is that McLaren is one of the strong, well-funded teams that gets extra bonuses for past performance, and they had one of the top drivers until this year, but they have been sucking it up for years now. You can put part of the blame on Honda, but the fact that Honda has had a far better working relationship with the Red Bull organization, could point to management issues within McLaren.

But the part the caught my eye was how the payouts were structured:
quote:
Formula One’s annual prize money payout is public knowledge and came to $913 million last year...
The core prize money is equivalent to 47.5% of F1’s underlying profit. It is then divided into two with one half split between the top ten teams in the championship on a sliding scale based on race results. The other half is split evenly but is still driven by race performance as it only goes to teams which have finished in the top ten in two out of the past three years. That is just the start of the story.
In 2013 we revealed for sports broadcaster ESPN that a further 7.5% of F1’s underlying profit is handed to the top three teams based on the number of races won in the four seasons prior to 2012, which is when this benefit was first introduced. This bonus pot is known as the Constructors’ Championship Bonus (CCB) fund and it comes to at least $100 million annually.
It is guaranteed regardless of the teams’ race results and is split between Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull Racing which leads the CCB pack. This gives it a minimum of $37 million from the CCB fund with McLaren getting at least $33 million for being ranked second and $30 million going to Ferrari. It doesn’t stop there.
Ferrari also gets its own dedicated prize money pay-out as well as sharing in the 47.5% and the CCB Fund. The dedicated prize pot gives Ferrari 5% of F1’s underlying profit which comes to at least $62.2 million annually. Like the CCB fund, this is paid regardless of Ferrari’s race results and it comes in return for the Italian squad being F1’s longest-standing team having been racing in the championship since it was launched in 1950.

I just got to the episode in the Netflix F1 show that featured Grosjean. It makes you wonder how he still has a job.

Sounds like the Big 12 honestly.

Grosjean picked up all of Haas’s points during the 2nd half of 2018.
This year, Haas have a car/setup issue.

Williams gets a legacy bonus as well. Ferrari always threatens to leave F1 and F1 kind of calls their bluff, but truth is they need each other.
Don't think it would be terrible to see Ferrari leave for a dozen years. All the other major manufacters have come and gone.
