Why do they do it?

There’s always commercials on the radio for “big” upcoming regular season games. These are standalone, not like a “hey these are big games coming up this weekend: nfl, wnba, hockey, etc”

It’s always “you’re in store for something special Monday night!!! The game everyone will be watching……”

Do they think people are going to hear this and suddenly become wnba fans/viewers?

Sure, some folks might not be big nfl fans, but hear a commercial for a big Monday night matchup and make it a point to tune in. But this isn’t happening for wnba games.

Do they think their marketing dollars are best suited for this, or just don’t care and have to push a crap product?

They paid for the rights and would prefer people watch. Pretty simple.

Because it’s part of their NBA contract

No doubt. But I can’t see this actually making that happen. Nobody is tuning in after hearing these commercials.

Their best work to sneak some headlines in are something like "5 time all-star Jackson to resign with team". That could be any league, any sport.

and the amount that they promote/advertise is almost assuredly built into their agreement

This. It's no different than any other network running ads for whatever other shows they have.

But the ads probably work to some extent for other games.

If it raises their viewership from 5 people to 10 then that's double the views right there

If you ever actually watch a WNBA game, it looks like they are special needs. It’s that painful.

You almost have to hate basketball to watch the WNBA.

The whole league is one big participation trophy.

This doesn’t bother me.

What does bother me is when you go to the TV Guide and it says: College Basketball: Duke vs UNC and then you flip it on and it’s women’s.

again, it probably is to a certain degree. the media right agreement most likely has clauses in it that force ESPN to let the WNBA spend a certain amount of its advertising budget with them and then force it to show highlights on their shows

One of 'The Lead' headlines on the bottom line over the weekend was "Liberty win behind 22-0 4th quarter run".

I legit thought it was referencing the Liberty University football game for a moment.

My favorite is the vaguely worded articles on ESPNs website. You’re 90% sure it’s about WNBA but have to click on it because it’s vague enough it could be something important

“Sources: Jones expected to miss 2-4 weeks”

“Smith seeking new long term contract”
