You bunch of fricking idiots

This crackdown on helmet to helmet hits won't take a god damn thing away from the game. Trent Dilfer just said something like, "fans want to see players getting crushed and knocked around"

Yes Trent, that is true. But nobody wants to fricking see players carried off the field with concussions, NOBODY. I swear these guys are listening to oulsufantard

I don't think Matt Millen has ever said anything that made me think he was knowledgable about the game in the least.

Disagree

These guys have been taught for YEARS to lead with their head. It's the natural movement when making a tackle. Now they'll be thinking/worrying about how to tackle without getting suspended. That moment of pause will result in injury and/or not making the tackle. The NFL is becoming more and more pussified. Might as well change it to flag football.

Or worse, seeing someone paralyzed

These idiots are missing the point. If players start having more concussion-related mental problems after their career is over they could hold the NFL liable. That's all. NFL doesn't want to get sued.

Wanting to prevent head injuries and the paralyzing of players doesn't make a person a pussy. The NFL should protect its employees. Some of you people are really insecure about your manhood if you think trying to save lives makes someone a pussy.

Every analyst they had agreed with the NFL on Helmet to Helmet. They disagreed when the NFL said they'd suspend you for inadvertingly cause an injury during a legal tackle. They basically are trying to say a tackle thats normally fine becomes illegal should the player get injured.

The suspensions on helmet to helmet hits doesn't bother me as much as the suspensions regarding big hits.

So the equipment is light years better than it was even 10 years ago, but now the NFL is more liable and more concussions are occurring?

i think young actually made the best points.

the nfl is terrified of going the way of boxing, of having more and more Mike Websters and Andrew Watters. i like football like everyone else, but i'm definitely not someone that likes seeing guys carted off the field, or stumbling into middle age.

i think it's inevitable that the game will evolve even more as the long term results of both the low frequency / high impact hits and the high frequency / relatively low impact hits are better understood.

I don't think they are being taught to lead with the head, but it's apparently they aren't being taught how to tackle properly.

Hence, leading with the head.

I read "devastating" hits as leading with the helmet, forearm to the helmet, etc.

Honestly, they need to get people to quit dropping their heads. The natural motion of tackling with the shoulder can end up helmet to helmet though. In those instances, suspension is insane.

That's not what the NFL is targeting though

They're targeting leading with the crown of the helmet

Due to anatomy, it's virtually impossible to not lead with your head and make a form tackle and wrap up with your arms.

some argue that's part of the problem. that the better equipment allows a defender to be fearless in using his body as a weapon.

this happened in hockey, where when helmets became mandated league-wide, the instances of head injuries / concussions went up. the guys at freakonomics actually did a really good podcast w/ a couple of NFL DB's that explored this exact issue.
