i agree, and i usually hate quibbling over those rankings but Texas-USC at 7 and Penn St-Miami at 5, come on
Looking back the 1986 Penn State Miami Fiesta Bowl was i think a watershed game. It was the first time they went out of the way to have a 1 v 2 "National Title" Bowl Game when the Fiesta Bowl, Sunkist (the sponsor) and NBC stepped up when it looked like both would go unbeaten and upped the payout and moved the game from early Jan 1 to prime time on the 2nd (or maybe 3rd, Friday anyway). It ultimately lead to the Bowl Alliance and later the BCS. But it was a horrible, boring game. Penn States offense was less exciting than the typical Les Miles offense just an awful game. Miami should have won by 3 TDs at least. They played like crap, Vinny had 4 picks going into the last drive and they were throwing into the end zone for the win when he threw the 5th pick. Its even worse that Penn State won knowing what we know now.

People labeled it as such 50 years ago and just can't seem to let go. It's like the moniker of "The Greatest Game Ever Played" in the NFL with the 50's Colts and Giants, just because it was the first big game that went to OT and Johnny U invented the 2-minute drill that time.
Well, there have been tons of better games since then.

One of the most shocking upsets to win the National Title but one of the most boring games.
Penn State had no offense, they had 8 1st downs and 156 yards...the entire fricking game!
Miami had 22 1st downs and 445 yards and lost!
Penn State had 53 passing yards for the entire game.
The game is only memorable because the best team of that decade lost because they turned the ball over all night long and still dominated time of possession.
Miami had 7 turnovers and still almost won the game at the end.
#19 Boise/Oklahoma and #7 Texas/USC should be Top 5. Those are the two best games I've seen on this list and I've seen most since the mid-80's.

Contextually speaking, this game meant nothing.
They were PRESEASON #5 and this was game 1. This wasn't November. Michigan is ALWAYS overrated at the beginning of the season. This turned out to be a 4-loss Michigan who to a 9-4 Oregon team 39-7 the very next week.
It's a condescending "oooh, look at the country bumpkins winning in THE BIG HOUSE" rating.
, and yet, everyone remembers it as an all time upset. It was also an exciting game to say the least.
ETA - I don't think it's a top 5 game though. They have it overrated.

Agreed on those games. Classics.

Slightly better than the 1/9/12 LSU output only they won
It was an awful game, as I mentioned above I can only assume they are giving it bonus points for its significance.

I’m not old enough to have seen it but 35-31, lots of back and forth 1 v 2, this is a legit great game well deserving of a top 5 ranking

I mean, a 6-5 FCS James Madison beating an ACC Champion Virgina Tech in 2010 is a much more shocking FCS/FBS upset and it's not even ranked and is largely forgotten.
But this one is #3 all time over nailbiters that determined national championships?
And to put this in relative terms, how stupid would it be to put UMBC over Virginia as the 3rd greatest game in college basketball history? I'm not saying it wasn't big. I'm saying #3 is lunacy.

I'm not saying it can't be Top 5.
I'm just saying I grew up hearing it as the greatest game ever played and it's sort of odd 50 years later, they can't seem to deviate from that perception.
There's a lot of ingrained old man bias in this list.
It's like how Sight and Sound had Citizen Kane listed as the #1 movie of all-time voted on by Directors.
It wasn't until this past 20 years things have moved a little.
I doubt any of the voters for 1971 Nebraska game actually saw the game but it's supposed to be #1 according to what their Dad's told them.

I would argue that the Flutie Hail Mary game against Miami is ranked at a minimum two spots too low.

What a cop out, this is just backlash, dismissing something because you heard it was great is no different than liking it for that reason. you are completely dismissing the possibility that someone could you know, just think it was a great game. Just like Citizen Kane is a great movie and directors of all people can appreciate its brilliance and innovation.

Have YOU seen the game?
I wouldn't judge something until I've actually watched it. It's available on YouTube, I sat through all of it, and I have to say it lives up to its billing.

My point wasn't about seeing the game.
It was that it was labeled as such 50 years ago...
And we have a tendency to keep things in stone, as if sports doesn't evolve.
Even the guys who played on the so-called "Greatest Game Ever Played" in the NFL said years later, ah, it wasn't that great a game to be honest.
Things get labeled and stick in stone forever. That Nebraska game was labeled; it was the game of the Century...
Well, we had about a dozen more Game of the Century before the Century was over.
Nebraska had 65 passing yards and OU 185. They combined for 124 rushing attempts.
Not sure if a modern audience would find that all exciting. And there were 4 turnovers in the game.
I mentioned 1986 Penn State and how boring that game was...imagine if BOTH sides were playing like PSU? At least it was fun watching Miami shoot itself in the foot.

Also, calling Oregon a 4 loss team at the time they played Michigan is kinda misleading. Oregon under Dennis Dixon was only a 1 loss team looking like the best team in the country. Dixon scored quick against Arizona, then got hurt and then Arizona proceeded to win that game and the wheels fell off of Oregon's season after Dixon was lost. One of the biggest "what could have beens" in CFB history

Four of the top six involve Miami? Hmmmm. Interesting.
They lose 3 of the four, and were No. 1 for most of those.

They probably go WTF????? But during that era it lived up to its billing.....

In terms of importance, excitement and historical context, I think in my lifetime USC/Texas and the original Miami/Nebraska are 1 and 1a.
And I was alive for and watched an entire replay of Oklahoma/Nebraska.

LSU is 5-0-1 in the games on the list. No 1/9.
Also, from the bunching on the list, I don’t think these are in any sort of order.

That Nebraska OU game always gets put at the top but I don't think it should be.
Texas v USC in the Rose Bowl for the NC should be #1. Notre Dame v Miami, Catholics vs Convicts, would be #2 in my book.

I know what you're saying, but it was an objectively good game too. Virginia got dominated.
It's not a better game than Boise Oklahoma or Texas USC though, no way.

Is the South Carolina-Alabama game from 2000/2001 on there?
And I remember watching the 7OT game.
