In the newest installment of ESPN's yearlong initiative marking 150 years of college football, we set out to rank the 150 greatest games in history.

A panel of 150 media members, athletic administrators and former players and coaches selected these games from 202 finalists initially identified by ESPN's Stats & Information group.

The voters opted for what they saw with their own eyes -- as the vast majority of selections came from the televised era. But there might not be a recency bias.

1. No. 1 Nebraska 35, at No. 2 Oklahoma 31
Nov. 25, 1971

Some good, some bad.

UK's win over Oklahoma in '51 should be way higher.

Objectively speaking, App State/Michigan is about 140 spots too high.

29. No. 1 Texas 15, at No. 2 Arkansas 14
Dec. 6, 1969
More than 50 million Americans watched the Longhorns climb back from a 14-0 deficit in The Big Shootout to win their 19th consecutive game. A 44-yard toss from James Street to Randy Peschel on fourth-and-3 sparked the game-winning drive. President Richard Nixon attended the game and presented the Longhorns with a plaque declaring them national champions -- before postseason bowl games were played.

Nov. 3, 2001
The Razorbacks and Rebels battled for more than four hours in a seven-overtime thriller that wasn't decided until Arkansas' Jermaine Petty stopped Ole Miss tight end Doug Zeigler 2 yards short of the goal line in the final OT. The score was tied at 10 after three quarters and 17 at the end of regulation. The teams combined for 988 yards of offense and scored 80 points in overtime.

Won't ever forget this game

Idk, that's the kind of game everyone remembers where they were when it went final.

It's also a game that meant nothing to every team but 2. Can't wait to see ucf over Auburn if this game was #3.

Contextually speaking, this game meant nothing.

They were PRESEASON #5 and this was game 1. This wasn't November. Michigan is ALWAYS overrated at the beginning of the season. This turned out to be a 4-loss Michigan who to a 9-4 Oregon team 39-7 the very next week.

It's a condescending "oooh, look at the country bumpkins winning in THE BIG HOUSE" rating.

Not gonna try to disagree with No. 1, wasn't alive to witness or watch it but those two teams WERE STACKED and the game reflected as such. the 1971 OU Sooners are probably the most dominant team in history not to win the championship, that team AVERAGED:
-45 PPG
-563 YPG
-472 RYPG (NCAA record)
-7 YPRA
-27 point average MOV
-OBLITERATED Heisman winner Pat Sullivan and Auburn Tigers in the Sugar Bowl

If anyone has never seen this game and has a few hours to kill, I would highly recommend watching it sometime. Oklahoma's wishbone was devastating at the time but its one fatal flaw was the amount of fumbling that came with handling the ball that much so close to the line of scrimmage.

All of that came into play that day.

That said, Texas/USC should be #1. That game is in a class of its own, IMO.

Was alive and remember watching this game. I've researched over the years quite a few times and it's amazing the talent on that field for that era.

It is almost as if they are biased against recent games in that list

Well the season before they were undefeated until Ohio State. They had some talented seniors returning, so there was more reasoning behind the preseason ranking than just "omg they michigan!". And even despite those setbacks they ended up playing for the Big Ten title against against Ohio State yet again.

I agree that once the dust settled on the season Michigan wasnt as good as we had thought and Appy State went on to win their 3rd FCS title in a row, so some luster was lost but it was still a big shock to CFB fans everywhere when it happened. And it was the first major upset that set that whole 2007 season in motion which was probably the craziest season in CFB history.

The best game in 2007 was Pitt/WVU. Also, I find it hard to believe that there have been 59 games in college football history that were better than the show that Georgia and Oklahoma put on in the semifinals two years ago.

Why? Remember, the polls were decided before bowls back then.

Is the Jan 66 Orange Bowl listed? That was the first national title bowl game. The AP waited until after the bowls that season and it was #3 Nebraska and #4 Alabama after #1 Michigan St and #2 Arkansas had already lost.

Interesting to see Nebraska in both of the top 2 games. I remember when they used to have that “Best Damn” show and did the Top 50 football plays of all-time, Nebraska had 5 of the Top 50. That means 10% of the Top 50 best/craziest plays involved them. Weird.
