None of these are what the OP said

What the hell are you talking about? The OP is clearly talking about a team taking multiple QBs in the same draft. It's been done before and it will be done again. Several people in this thread have listed examples and you keep saying that's not what the OP said.

Is it a good strategy? I guess that would depend on a lot of different circumstances but it's not completely off the wall in an era when teams are willing to tie up over 25% of their cap space in one position or mortgage their future with a bounty of draft picks for one proven FA. Tossing out a late draft pick on a Plan B diamond in the rough doesn't cost much and it lights a fire under the butt of Plan A.

Yes, the Redskins drafted RG3 and Kirk Cousins in the same year. Once RG3 got injured Kirk took off

Redskins also drafted Heath Shuler in the top 5, then grabbed Gus Frerotte in the 6th or 7th round. Frerotte ended up having a fairly decent career while Shuler was absolutely terrible. (Saints bailed out Washington sending them a 3rd for Shuler. Bill Kuharich and Mike Ditka.)

Put it this way. The Colts are 10x better off with Flacco than the are with Richardson..,and Joe is like 45 years old.

Cowboys Troy Aikman and Steve Walsh

The Cowboys then turned around and traded Walsh to the Saints for picks that garnered them Erik Williams (3 Time All Pro) and Russell Maryland. Both those guys ended up gaining three SB rings.

It’s been done one time with a relative amount of success since dudes weren’t selling cars in the offseason to make ends meet

I’d rather take my chances on a QB in rounds 3-5 than the first round. It’s a crapshoot who will pan out.

Spend 5 minutes googling the hit rates on QB’s taken in round 1 vs 3-5

They took Walsh in the supplemental draft, which caused them to lose what would have been the #1 pick in the 1990. Since Jimmy was there they likely would've picked future Hall of famer Cortez Kennedy with that #1 pick. Even though they made up for it by the Saints also doing a very dumb thing they probably still messed up getting Walsh.

I’d rather be on the side of the people actually doing the drafting than rando posters on a message board lol

It’s amazing that so many people are still apparently this confused here

I've believed for a while this is a good strategy for teams. You can't be good without a QB. Draft a bunch one year, play the numbers game, and let them shake out.

For the most part QB development is broken and roster spots are too limited to carry more than 3.

Even if you draft 5 QBs you are only gonna be able to focus on the starter and 1 backup getting reps so the other QBs you draft are just gonna stay stagnant or regress. Its not like you can send them to the minors to get reps.

So you will have to decide which of the 5 QBs you draft to give that #2 spot to during training camp and he will have more of an opportunity than the other 4, so at that point why not just cut the shite and take the one you like better and let someone else develop the other and sign one from somewhere else down the line if needed

I agree with you, I thought the Saints should have grabbed another QB. Why put all your eggs in one basket when you can draft two and have them develop and compete against each other.

Because none of the guys after ward are even NFL starters in the majority of GM’s minds.
