As we all know, Kaepernick was named "citizen of the year" by GQ magazine.

But what did Kaepernick DO? He didn't really DO anything other than take a political stance. He simply spouted off his opinions. That's it.

JJ Watt actually DID something. JJ Watt helped raise nearly $40 million dollars for hurricane victims and made sure 100% of the money will go to real people who need it.

It seems we're at a point in society where simply holding certain opinions makes one virtuous, and actions don't matter as much. JJ Watt was given a pat on the back for his actions, yet Kaepernick is deemed a hero simply for his opinions without any action.

For example... imagine JJ Watt raised all of that money but was openly in opposition to Kaepernick. How do you think he would be treated by the media? He would be excoriated. Yet who helped more people with their actions? The media would argue that Kaepernick is a more virtuous person because of his opinions, even though he hasn't actually DONE anything.

I don't hate Kaepernick and I don't love JJ Watt.

It's just my perception from afar.

My beef with Kaep is he won't/can't even explain what his mission or goal is. I don't think he talked in GQ. He probably knows he is too stupid to articulate his thoughts without sounding like an idiot. I guess he has a little bit of a mystique for a little while in being quiet, but comparing him to past civil rights icons is a joke. He is becoming a bit of caricature that is all about Kaep.

He's donated over $900k of his own money to various charities.

Hate him for his beliefs all you want, but he actually does shite unlike what everyone thinks.

i dont think more or less people would buy a GQ magazine if it were JJ or Kaep.

Kaep gets people talking about GQ. JJ watt on the cover, no one would pay it much attention. Just my view from afar.

People "give a shite about this magazine" because, like so much else, it has hit "the media" and is now in front of our faces, so to say.

I'm not saying that Kaepernick is as heroic as Rosa Parks or that he made a similar impact by any means.

But the same people who think like you, back in the 60's, would have said the same thing about what she did. "How is she a hero, all she did was sit there?" "What about this other person who saved lives or donated money?" You aren't the first, nor the last, to try to discredit protests which you don't agree with by minimalizing the actions they take.

I don't think anyone is calling him a hero. What he did was brave, regardless of if you agree or disagree with him. He risked his job for making his stance known - a job paying him millions to be a backup QB, which is almost the ideal job. And he stood by it after the backlash. He started a movement. Maybe it doesn't go anywhere, maybe it does.

He also donated plenty of his own money to programs to help inner city youth.

Well what J.J. Watt did has been done by thousands before him and if he hadn't of done it someone else would have. It doesn't take courage to raise money after a natural disaster.

Yep that's definitely your only beef You don't find irrational reasons to hate him by doing things like assuming he's not intelligent for really no reason at all

This is really what it comes down to. No question Watt (and a ton of others) would have been more valid choices.

This wasn't about choosing the best person for their cover. This wasn't even about Kaepernick. This was a publicity stunt for GQ. And in that respect, it's worked like a charm, unfortunately.

He donated his own money.

I think if he started a gofundme like Watt did people would donate too.

Would it get to the level of Watt? Probably not, but it would be more than 900k.

The media rewards ideology.

Left wing ideology - media praise

Right wing ideology - media ignores or criticizes

Nothing else matters.

Whats unfortunate?

Their job is to sell more magazines.

This most likely will than putting JJ Watt on the cover.

This is true. But what is there to reward about right wing ideology, in this context? When it comes to sticking up for most right wing ideology, it just means sticking up for the status quo and the way things have always been - not a lot of backlash in those scenarios that would make it a struggle to speak up about.
