I am not knowledgeable enough on all time NBA greats to chime in here. Is he really a top-10 all time player? Top 20? Does he get a "bump" because of his personal tragedy? Sincerely want the opinions of NBA fans.

Of course. Kobe might be top 20. Might. He sure as hell isn't top 10.

Bill Simmons is a douche but he did spend 3 years researching the history of basketball and watching tons of old tape and he had Kobe in the Top 10 all-time of his basketball pyramid just ahead of Jerry West.

The only question is was he top 5 and does this bump him to top 5? And the answer is no. I don't see anyone in the media arguing now that Kobe is Top 5 all-time with Magic, Bird, Jordan Kareem, etc.

Top 20. I personally would not go top 10.

That said, yes, in the immediate aftermath of an untimely death, emotion absolutely will play a role for a lot of people.

Objectively, Kobe isn't a candidate for Top 5, but I wouldn't get mad at people who thought so right now. It's a shocking, tragic loss and that will make people elevate him.

Kobe isnt MJ but he scored 83 points in an NBA game. He definitely earned a mention when discussing some of the greatest players ever regardless of whether you think he’s closer to 5 or 15. What does it really matter anyways. He was all time great. That’s not debatable.

I like how people shite on Bill Simmons and turn around immediately and use his opinion as one that matters

His legacy gets skewed by the fact that he was the face of a lot of championships for the sport's most marketable franchise. Similar to how when Jeter retired you heard a lot of people way overstating his ultimate standing as an all-timer. Kobe is top 20 all time, but if he had played most of his career in Milwaukee he wouldn't be quite so hyped

LINK

This list has him #5 on the list of Greatest Laker...ahead of Wilt. So it's safe to say Kobe is not Top 5 in the NBA.

If you factor in he was a ball hog and a terrible teammate...he would be lucky to be Top 20.
