they were the preseason #1 ranked team in the country yet are limping into the postseason possibly unranked in the new polls. The freshmen class of Randle and the Harrison twins was being hyped as possibly the best ever. Last year was a massive disappointment for them too in losing to Robert Morris in the first round of the NIT.

How much goodwill does the national title two years ago buy him?

If they strip it from him, not much.

Preseason rankings suck. Pretty sure everyone can agree this team never should've received a number 1 ranking before ever playing a game.

source: Kentucky basketball this year.

Considering how average UK for a good time before they hired him, that buys him plenty of goodwill.

Normal Kentucky fans (and there are a few of us), knew that this is what you get with Cal. The best players in HS want to play for him, and the end result is a lot of start power out of HS who are one and done kind of players. If you know this as a UK fan, you can predict that this will happen from time to time.

Now with that said, I thought this years team would be light years ahead of last year, again, based on rankings alone. This year proves that the transition from HS to college can be difficult, especially if you haven't been challenged a lot along the way.

Randle is the real deal and will be a top 5 pick. WCS will be a lottery pick, but I expect the rest to stay. Young might go, but he's at best a streaky shooter with little defensive skill. Not sure he's ready. I think the Harrison's stay along with Johnson and Lee (he might transfer).
They have another great class for next year, and if this holds true, they will be a favorite again.

Last year's team was odd, the PG we were anticipating being so good, didn't pan out, and it really takes a great PG in Cal's system.

He's been here 5 years, we have 2 final fours, 3 elite 8's in the previous 4 and who knows what will happen with this year's team. They could make a deep run, or go out in the 1st round.

Cal will be here as long as he wants to be, which I don't think will be that much longer, maybe 3-4 years. I see him retiring while still fairly young and going into some charitable work. He seems to have a real heart for it.

Cal will have them competitive again once he stops trying to sell kids on the idea that Kentucky will get you to the NBA the fastest. He needs to retain some of the guys that know their role as complimentary players instead of trying to form an all-star team every year.

Guys like Ryan Harrow and Kyle Wiltjer weren't great last year but they certainly could have helped this team with outside shooting and leadership. Instead they were basically forced out as "not good enough" to play for Kentucky.

Last year wasn't anymore of a disappointment than losing in the elite 8 when it comes down to it. UK fans want NCs and absolutely anything else is a disappointment.

Harrow and Wiltjer both left on their own because of what was coming in behind them. Harrow never developed as a Cal type point guard, and he was here for a year behind Teague. That was pretty disappointing. Wiltjer could have stayed, but he knew his PT would be minimal, and his defensive skills were lacking.

Looking back, this year's team is lacking defensive skills at every position.

The Harrison Bros are gone. Wouldn't surprise me if Poythress left too

Not what we are hearing locally. The rumor is the Harrison's have already told Cal they are coming back, and honestly they need to. They are not ready yet, but I guess time will tell.
I think Poythress need another year as well, he will likely move back to starting next year.

There are some looney toon talk show callers calling for Cal's head but I think most people know we can't do better. Are we frustrated from the last two seasons? Yes, but it's the bed we made and we have to sleep in it.

ETA:The 2012 team was a blessing and a curse. It was awesome watching that team, but I think it really hurt our players attitudes the past two years. They made it look so easy that these top guys think they can just waltz in and win a NC. Not gonna happen.

I think Randle and WCS go, Young, maybe. I think the rest are back. We'll see though.

That's the nature of the beast when you recruit one and done players. Every year the team is massively different, and if your recruits don't pan out you struggle. But when they do, well see 2 years ago

it all worked out too perfectly that year. AD and MKG were absolute perfection for 1 and done players and the roster had experienced players to complement them wonderfully. this team doesnt have doron lamb or darius miller. you need guys like that to make things run smoothly.

i think it will work very well every now and then, but it's obvious that last year and this year (which is obviously TBD) are the alternatives when 2012 doesnt happen.
