They are not. When SS start to lose their range they transition to 3rd.

Where do 2nd basemens transition to?

Because they are limited to a certain position b/c of their arm strength.

As fielding goes I say 2nd basemen are better athletes but for hitting and fielding I give the edge to 3rd basemen.

I agree. As someone already said, it all depends on how athlete is defined and what athletic attributes you value most. Lateral movement, speed and range are going to favor the 2nd basemen. Power and potentially reflexes will favor the third baseman.

here is a reason that they move old cathers to 3rd base and not 2nd. And no Biggio wasn't old when they moved him.

If you can give me five successful players who did this I will be surprised. Try.

2nd base, easily. Need range. 3rd basemen can be a statue almost. Helps if they are athletic, but it isn't necessary.

Also depends on level. In college and pros most infielders have strong arms. I think some people would be surprised how strong MLB 2nd basemens arms are....they should try backhanding a ball behind the bag and making the throw to first.

No thanks. I didn't make that claim.

With 2nd base, you have to cover more ground, but you can have an average arm...

With 3rd base, you have to have quick reflexes and a strong arm, but you cover hardly any ground unless you are just absolutely able to cut the ball off before it can get to shortstop...

I'll go with 2nd as having to be more athletic. When have you ever seen a good amount of fat 2nd basemen starting at one time in the MLB? I'd say it happens far more often at 3rd.

Played 2nd and 3rd.

3rd is tougher to play. Need to be more athletic to play 2nd.

Same here, and shortstop.

Without a doubt, you are correct. They call it the Hot Spot for a reason.

I played short too. By far the most fun to me.

Not to sound cocky, but is it just me, or was the best part to SS being able to show off how good you can play? I always thought that was the best part... Also gets you recognized fast because it's an important position.

Yep, and it is also a hard position to play, so that always made me feel like there wasn't as much pressure on me. And in baseball, playing free of pressure is so important. I wouldn't even have to think out there. It felt like I was in control. I always wanted the ball to come to me.

Admittedly at 3rd, if a heavy hitter was up, I wouldn't mind him hitting it somewhere else.

biggest diff between the two positions

2nd -better feet

3rd -better arm

generally speaking better feet translates into athleticism more than a strong arm
