According to the Braves, this is not true. They are moving to the outskirts of town, saying their support comes from the northern suburbs.

Eh, Milwaukee is that smallest metro area with a MLB team. And it's not much bigger than New Orleans metro area. It's also smack dab in the middle of the league in terms of percentage attendance.
No reason to think that if New Orleans had a MLB team since the late 60's with some success that the city wouldn't support them now.
It might be tough to attract a team now, but it is kind of odd that they never got one.

St. Louis had a great ABA team. Spirits of St. Louis

Found an old AP article from 1989 about baseball exhibitions in the Dome. LINK

The Baltimore Orioles were ready to move to New Orleans in 1974, but the Superdome Commission couldn't guarantee the stadium would be finished in time. That left businessman Joe Canizaro -the principal money man in the search- red-faced in anger and embarrassment.

But the stadiums that are consistently sold old hold less than 50k. Wrigley holds less then 40k and Fenway is smaller.
Baseball in the dome was bad, I went to many Pelican games there and it was not a pleasant place for baseball. If a team would have move here we would have lost them long before now

The Zephyrs do not even have 200 people on some nights come to their games.
I went to a Zephyr game back in August when I was in town with a friend. I went to buy tickets and he stopped me and said just wait. We stood there for 5 minutes and he just kept asking people if they were giving away tickets. Some lady just gave us 4 tickets no money exchanged. I was baffled by it but my friend says he's never paid to go to a game.

The only reason could possibly support a team is because of baseball season being during good tourism months.
Even then, the smallest city with 3 of the 4 major sports is Pitt and they are twice the size of the NOLA metro area and have a rabid sports following(sans pirates )

That's why if we had one our stadium would need to be in metry by causeway and i10... I'd expect our ticket buyers to come from metry, uptown, the river parishes, and the northshore

Urban area includes the city and suburbs...the population of the city of Atlanta isn't significant but the metro is massive. NO urban area is just over 1M, you can't compare it to ATL with a metro 5X as big

Never heard this in this context.
With that definition, of course you can't compare.

Could NOLA support an NHL team?

The Superdome as a baseball venue was a joke.
We had a minor league team in 76. Pelicans 2.0. It did not make it. And I forget if it's left or right field that was like 250 feet. Slight exaggeration, but not by much.
If the city would have pulled off the A's, they would have to have had a real stadium by the 1990s or else it would have been over.

Exactly, several NHL teams are in small markets.

NHL is a weird animal.
There seems to be a lot more to it than attendance. Atlanta has lost 2 teams to very small markets, Calgary and Winnipeg.
The interest in both teams here was good. Ownership sucked badly, especially with the Thrashers. Attendance for the Thrashers was not good, but it was more a function of a terrible team. Winnipeg is sold out, but their numbers are low because their arena is small.
So, to answer your question, it is possible, but who knows?

Is it really that weird that Atlanta lost two hockey franchises to Canadian cities?

Lafayette drew 5-10 K a night with the Ice Gators for many years.
One of life's great mysteries.

In a vacuum, no.
But Dallas, Phoenix, Nashville and Tampa still have teams. And there is more to it than just attendance.
