Was the field just really weak when Smarty Jones was racing in the Triple Crown races? He was undefeated going in, won he Kentucky Derby, and then won the Preakness by a very wide margin. I think it was 11 lengths or something.

Smarty Jones at least has to be one of the best Triple Crown horses of the last 10 or so years, no?

well they definitely weren't real strong. i've seen weaker fields. Lion Heart and Rock Hard Ten were good horses as was Birdstone. 2004 wasn't exactly a great year for U.S. thoroughbreds though.

well.. he didn't win the Triple Crown. if you mean of the horses that raced in all three legs, then yeah I'd say he's close to the top over the last decade. Afleet Alex was better, IMO. maybe Funny Cide as well.

Real Quiet was a good one, no one mentioned Silver Charm though.

Can't believe Real Quiet got that big of a lead and then couldn't hold it. How long did it take them to announce the winner?

yeah he came within a photo finish of winning the TC. probably took only a minute or two to announce the winner.

my favorite horse of my lifetime is silver charm because he was fricking cool. i hated fusiachi pegasus and charismatic. charismatic fricked me over because i had menifee in some monster pool because i fricking loved pat day. lost by a nose.

ETA: i loved pat day because he won the derby the year i was born on Lil E. Tee (for some reason my mom used to tell us what horse and jockey won the derby in our birth years) and because he lives in Lake Forest which is really fricking close to where i lived in louisville.

Point Given seems to always get left out of the conversation because he didn't win the derby. He won the Preakness and Belmont easy.

unfortunately he's trained by Todd Pletcher, who was 0 for 24 in the Derby until Super Saver (ahem.. i mean Calvin Borel) finally won it for him last year.

Big Brown was a badass.

I really think Barbaro would have pulled it off. fricking Brother Derek was jealous of Barbaro and took him out.

I'm still mad I didn't bet him in the Derby. I had him pegged as the Preakness winner before they even ran the Derby (also, his jockey was Prado, who won me a lot of money when he rode in Maryland). When he won the Derby, I was actually annoyed because it was gonna mess with my odds for Barbaro.

Someone asked about The Factor. I don't have the specific race, but his highest Beyer is a 108. That's awesome.

definitely a great horse, he just doesn't have the record or body of work for me to put him up there with those other horses. he gets lots of love for being the son of Secretariat.

that's solid. Uncle Mo got an 89 Beyer in his 3 y/o debut.

i rewatched a couple of The Factor's races last night. he reminds me of Smarty Jones with his speed and way of running, but I just don't know if he has the pedigree to show staying ability at 10 furlongs or more.

I was at the Rebel and The Factor definitely impressed me. He will be part of my strategy for Derby Day.
