In 2019, 9 teams scored more than 38 ppg

In 2020, 16 (nearly double) scores that much.

Defenses have been atrocious this season and this Bama offense is amazing no doubt, but trying to say they wmare the best ever is a bit much.

In fact, let’s look at the top 5 scoring defense rankings of the defenses faced by this Bama team:

14, 17, 29, 32, 39

Overall scoring defense average was 59.6

Now 2019 LSU?

1,3,7,13,17

Overall scoring defense average of 51.6.

That means LSU faces 4 defenses higher ranked than Bama’s best faced defense.

Only going to decline more and more. The days of the Alabama LSU 9-6 game are long gone for good.

The irony is that SEC fans would pride themselves on defense but can no longer do that and make fun of the Big 12 since essentially that’s what the conference has become.

Helps those defense stats that they played 2-3 G5 and an fcs team

Lack of spring ball, summer workouts, and fall camp hurts defenses.

Yet overall scoring offense average slightly went up.
16 team scored more than 38 ppg compared to just 9 last year. You can’t have it both ways. Defenses were worse and as another poster stated, losing Spring ball and other things were harder on defenses.

Defenses aren’t particularly bad, offenses are just particularly good now. We are witnessing an offense revolution that will take defenses a couple of years to catch up to.

Just shows the Big 12 was ahead of the game. They have had great offense's and bad defenses over the years but this year 3 of their teams were in the top 20 defenses in the nation. WVU, Oklahoma, Iowa State

It’s the offenses. They are almost impossible to contain due to their efficiency.

The only thing you can do is be dominant on the LOS defensively or super athletic on the back four and try to be good at situational football (red zone, 3rd down).

Geez give it a rest. We know LSU had a once in a lifetime season last year. Alabama has those once every 5 years or so.

They did this with a run dominant offense. That is the crazier part.

Again, it makes sense for defenses to get a little worse, but some of you are acting like the drop off after one season is due to a shift in offensive philosophy. It is straight bad defense. If anyone watched this season they’d see it.

As offenses evolve, defensive statistics are just going to get worse and worse
