Trevor Lawrence will not be a bust

Define not a bust. When you pick a guy first in the draft, you are generally expecting him to be HoF caliber or at the very least, be one of the top 3-5 players at his position for at least half a decade or more.

There’s nothing about him that says generational talent. Experts crowned his arse coming out of college and have continuously doubled down on it since. They almost never admit they were wrong about a guy.

What were they every year from '03-'16?

What were they in ‘08 and ‘09 with Russell?

And they were 8-5 in 2011 with Glennon at QB.

Bad and then they got as good as they were for a decade plus. This is a ridiculous argument you're making.

Is that better or worse than 9-4?

I’ve said it a thousand times on here and will say it a thousand more. When you are building a title contender from scratch, QB is the last thing you draft, not the first.

Jacksonville is looking at a multi year rebuild. They have a lot of needs. When a team like the Jaguars are just sitting there, and a QB prospect the caliber of Lawrence falls into their lap, you take him no questions asked. You play the odds and hope he’s your franchise QB for the next 10-15 years.

Jacksonville’s situation is a rarity. They didn’t have to trade away assets to move up in the draft, and they are fortunate a generational type QB is available.

You’re philosophy on how to construct a team has some merit in many other situations. Too often teams with a lot of needs will trade away assets, creating more needs as well as limiting their ability to address those needs in the future, to move up in the draft. Then they will reach for a QB.

I agree with him to an extent. I don’t think going after the qb first when you have holes all over the place is the play. Look how it’s worked out for the jets.

Look at the Texans. They just had to get a QB with their first ever pick and they were trash for years before they built their roster up and dudes like Schaub, Hoyer, and Osweiler were taking them to the playoffs. They just needed that one QB to take them to the next level.

Unfortunately for them, they took a privileged dynasty QB (the exact kind you don’t take) who likes molest women so yeah.

It’s ridiculous that people try to fight this when it’s been proven over and over the last decade or so. Hell even Brady went to a ready made team. That team would have been in the playoffs in 2019 if Jameis could have kept his picks under say... 25.

If they had picked Denzel ward or Bradley Chubb they wouldn’t be any better

They just picked the wrong QB

Baker Mayfield took the browns from 0 wins to 7. And Y3 they are a playoff team

A guy like Kyler Murray has totally transformed the cardinals immediately, too.

That’s what good QBs do. You can’t really win without them. You pick them when you can

To reiterate, 44 qbs have gone first, second or third overall in the last 50 NFL drafts, and exactly two--Aikman and Peyton--have won Super Bowls starting for the teams that drafted them. That makes selecting qbs up high exceptionally risky. My parting shot for @otlonespn:

Every team that passes on Sewell for a QB will regret it.

How many JUCO QBs get drafter a year?

I dont Think any NFL GM is thinking: well he only played one year at Auburn but he did start a full year at Blinn so no concerns there.
