Went to my first game when they were the 45’s. Then to the Dome when it opened in the mid 60’s. The first all star game in 68. Willie Mays was the mvp. Always went to the St. Louis series in May. My whole family were Cards fans except me. Easy to hate em. Nickel beer nights when I was 16. In 86 went to a few games and one Sunday game against the Dodgers we come back in the ninth to be em, and the crowd exiting the game were chanting bring on the Mets. Went to the second playoff game against the Mets. Nolan got beat even though he pitched a pretty good game. I’m trying to remember the announcer before Milo I used to listen to on the radio back in the day. One of his quotes was when a player tried to steal a base against the Stros and got thrown out. He would say he was so far out he doesn’t need to come up his next at bat. Great times and are getting greater. Lot of friends that I grew up with who were big Stros fans that aren’t here now, passed. This Stros for you.

Cool story. I think the announcer you are talking about is Gene Elston perhaps. I don't go quite as far back, but my fandom began in 1980 during the NLCS vs. the Phillies. Those last couple of losses were hard to take because the Astros had both games in their back pocket, but I became a fan and followed the games on radio for years after that. There is something magical about being a kid with a vivid imagination listening to a game on the radio and wanting so badly to go to this place called the Astrodome. When I finally got to go in 1985, I thought it was heaven. I would like to believe that all the heartbreak from post-seasons past and the agony of 100 loss seasons are going to pay off today with the ultimate reward: a championship. The Saints winning the Super Bowl was something I thought I would never see, and that happened....hopefully today is the day that the Astros do the same.

I remember where I was and what I was doing when he was promoted. Literally. That's how desperate for good news I was at the time.

I remember watching every pitch of his first start and being pumped about it. He was such trash in retrospect

I also remember watching a few games in August 2011 and seeing Altuve really play for the first time in his career and thinking "what the frick is going on here". These were the days of greats like Jason Bourgeois, Jason Michaels and Clint Barmes

One of my favorite dat quotes was after a solid week or so from altuve and someone says something to he effect of “this altuve guy might be a good stopgap second basemen”

Then it was like wait he is 22?

For some reason that conversation always stuck with me.

I saw that he was giving away tickets. To me if you can drop everything this late and book a plane ticket then you do well enough to just buy one.

Tickets tonight are going to be dirt-cheap near first pitch, relatively speaking.

Before 2014 I still really doubted he would be an above average major leaguer for a while. And even after 2014 I was like "okay this guy is good but I don't know if he can be the best position player on a championship team."

When he developed the power is when I think everyone realized how special he truly was.

Back when the most anticipated events (along with the promotion of our one good prospect after years of a dry farm system) were the Oswalt, Berkman and Pence trades.

Why couldn't we get Anthony Gose!?!?!?!?!

As awful as they were in 2013, 2010 to 2012 were really the low points for me. 2010 Drayton was still grasping to mediocrity and he hadn't put the team up for sale yet. 2011 everyone knew they were going to fricking suck yet you still weren't sure if Drayton would actually commit to a true rebuild. And I remember rumors that he might actually keep the team and take it off the market but maybe I'm making that up in my head.

I wasn't sure what to think of Crane and started to become optimistic when they hired Luhnow just because of where he came from his track record. Then by the end of 2012 and into 2013 Springer was setting the minors on fire, the early returns on Correa were excellent despite the injury and everyone was in love with their 2012 draft, and they were going to have the top pick again in the 2013 draft.

2010-2012 though were some very dark times as far as hope though for me at least. I thought they were going to suck hard for like 12 years Pirates style

08-09 were bad because we knew what was coming. There was just no hope.

2010-2012 sucked because I lost access to games in Baton Rouge, not that I was going to be locked in but still what else am I going to watch on a June Tuesday

I am guilty of telling Ryno that DDsJr would pass Altuve on the depth chart one day.

That is also true. The streak in 08 where they won like 15 of 16 before Ike was fun and gave some false hope though. Powered by former Astro greats like Darin Erstad and Randy Wolf
