Yeah, Dietrich is not Marwin as an overall defender but we don't need that with Tucker's emergence plus Kemp's versatility. We need a LF/corner infielder backup mostly. But we need a lineup full of hitters. This is the American League. Give me Ramos at catcher so we can put Reddick's arse in the 9-hole most days.

One potential FA utility type that might be available on a cheaper 2-3 year deal is former Astro Jed Lowrie. He's played all 4 IF positions over his career, but not OF.
Also super-UT Daniel Descalso, but he's not much of a bat.

I would love opening day 13 man position player roster to look something like (assuming Marwin is gone which I hope is wrong)
Catcher
Ramos
Stassi
IF
Yuli
Altuve
Correa
Bregman
OF
Springer
Reddick
Tucker
Jake
Utility types
Kemp
Marwin replacement (Dietrich or someone else)
That’s 12, then the question becomes whether we stick it out with White or go for a more established DH option. I think they will probably stick with White but I would love to get a more reliable bat at that spot

It would be a hell of a coup to sign Jed back without having a starting job for him (unless we know Altuve and/or Correa are going to be out for awhile). I just think he'll get one guaranteed somewhere. You never know. He'll turn 35 but just had a near 5 WAR season.
Lowrie would probably demand a no-trade clause from us even for a one-year deal because ya know...

Nelson Cruz would look good there. Veteran Beltran-esque role but a much better bat at this point in their careers.

If Marwin isn't back, and the Astros don't sign a locked in DH like Nelson Cruz, there should be ABs to go around.
If Marwin is back, then it makes no sense. If a locked in DH type is on the roster, then a lot of ABs are no longer available elsewhere.

White was fine as DH this year but with a championship contender, I'd like to do better than fine. I've seen contract predictions for Cruz in the 2 year 30-35 million range. I'd do that. Though the Mariners are all but guaranteed to offer him a QO so we'd lose a draft pick to them.

Rotation wise I think a lot hinges on when they feel Whitley will be coming up. There is so much depth you could really lose both Morton and Keuchel and not have to add anything. I think they will resign Morton, then patch the last two spots (assuming Lance is out) with James Peacock McHugh Framber and Whitley takes one spot quickly.
Corbin Martin also could be up next year

If the news about McCullers is true I think they look for outside help for the rotation along with trying to bring Morton back
Do we think Luhnow simply leans in the direction of using openers in lieu of adding a MOR arm? He loves the idea of it in theory but said he wouldn't do anything in the short term (ie this past year) given the rotation we had.

Yeah that was kind of what I was thinking when I posted the thing about the rotation a few posts up.
I would love for James to be in a multi inning relief role. I think he could be elite doing that.

I think we could very easily see an early season rotation of JV, Cole, Morton and any two of James/Frambaw/McHugh/Peacock. With Whitley, C. Perez, Bukake and C. Martin all on pace for 2018 debuts, there's no need for FA pitching unless Ludlow sees a bargain/reclamation project out there.

We should sign him and then trade him mid season back to the A's.

Yeah looking at it more I think the only way they do go for a FA starter is if Morton leaves, and I think it’s much more likely they just resign him
With Framber and Perez I don’t think we really need to add a LH reliever either

Morton is staying. He'll get a QO, and no one will risk giving up a pick. His injury history means he won't get a bigger deal than what Ludlow will give him.
Recency bias helps us, too. People will remember Morton's end of the season.

So, QO for Marwin, new 2-year deal for Morton, trade for Realmuto, done.

Yeah, I just don't see Ludlow getting a sweetheart deal for the baseball's best catcher.

Jeter is going to make it happen so the Astros can take down the Red Sox next year. He's still a Yankee deep down and hates Boston.
