DAT 8/14 Astros (McHugh) @ D-Backs (Greinke) 8:40 pm

I started my first ever DAT yesterday and the 1st place Astros ended a 5-game skid, so I figure "why get off a winner".
Yesterday's win had a playoff feel to it....great pitching and defense by the ace starter and ace closer, and timely hitting with the ageless wonder Carlos Beltran knocking in the go ahead run with a professional quality at-bat. The bull made its triumphant return to the DAT after a 7 day hiatus.
And to add to the good times, the Astros acquired a reliever in Tyler Clippard who might actually be able to get some guys out, as opposed to Francisco Liriano, whose name is Spanish for "Tony Sipp".
Today, the Astros try to tame Zach Greinke, who is 10-1 with a 2.52 ERA at home this year....but that loss came in his last outing. Over his last 3 starts, Greinke is 1-1 with a 4.58 ERA. Alas, he is human...
Colin McHugh has been good, except for the propensity to give up the big inning. He looks to feed off of the great effort by Keuchel and start a winning streak.
Hopefully the melting is over for a while. As always:

If you don't keep starting the DAT after wins, you get banished to some place horrible, like Charlottesville.
Or Sulphur.

Would love to see a good start from Jabroni. His stuff has looked good and I feel like he's close to putting it together

Now Verlander.
PTBNL or Cash considerations?

As long as you don't banish me to the Soccer Board, I can handle just about anything else.....

It would be most excellent if the bats can get him some early runs.
I posted this stat yesterday....it needs to change pretty soon:

Sunday was the 7th straight game that the Astros failed to score in the 1st inning.
And in the last 6 games, the Astros have a grand total of 4 runs in innings 1-3...and 3 of those came on the Bregman 3 run triple in Chicago.

The Dbacks lineup is pretty damn loaded. That combined with the fact that we face Greinke...splitting this home and home 2-2 would be very nice

Have we announced a corresponding roster move yet?

I would think Hoyt might be headed down but he's actually been pretty good lately

I wonder if this means that Sipp has quietly been removed from the equation. Last we heard from SIpp was August 1, when he was placed on the DL with "calf stiffness". Not a peep has been uttered since.
I also wonder how serious Harris' problem is. I think I read yesterday that he has started throwing again? Hopefully he gets back in time to get ready for post season.
And a side note....Gattis was placed on the 10 day DL yesterday. Apparently that concussion he had was pretty serious and he isn't ready to return yet.

Do we have to boot someone off the 40 man or were we at 39 after trading Aoki+Teoscar? Can't remember if JD was already on it or not

I think they are just being super cautious with him so he is 100% for the stretch run. As awful as the last 2 weeks have been, we're still 12 games up. No need to risk losing him for rest of season at this point

Last 5 appearances: 7 IP, 0 runs, 5 hits, 2 BB, 5 K.
It has all been in garbage time, but he has looked good.
It is either him or Guduan...Guduan pitched 1 good inning Saturday, but his 2 previous appearances weren't good at all.

Clippard is the 40th man so no moves for the 40-man but there will need to be a move to make room on the 25 man roster. 18 days until expanded rosters!

There's little not to like about the 6-foot-7 pitcher's first full pro season. After going 2-3, 2.91 with low A Quad Cities, he posted a similar 3-1, 3.16 stat line with high A Buies Creek. He's missed bushels of bats (13.4 strikeouts per nine innings this season). He's walked a reasonable amount of batters for a young power pitcher (3.4 walks per nine). He's proved hard to drive the ball off of -- opponents are slugging .340 against him this year.

Only 20 of the 121 first-round prep pitchers finished their first full season in high Class A, but the success rate of those who did is quite impressive. Pitchers ready for high Class A in their first full pro season include C.C. Sabathia, Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, John Danks, Scott Kazmir, Rick Porcello, Phil Hughes. Kerry Wood and Jose Fernandez. More than half of those pitchers went on to have big league careers of some significance.

If only Ludlow would have realized what we figured out at least a month ago. Would have made this process a tad easier.
