And you shouldn’t. And you’re not the only one. How many times do the same set of characters have to fail before they’re replaced? I know there’s a lot more to it than just deleting them from a roster spot but there’s 3 or 4 guys that have no business on any roster in the major leagues and that’s on Click. It’s not like these guys have suddenly taken a turn for the worse. They’ve been horrible for several months.

And it doesn’t help that Krusty the Clown is making decisions on nights where a good manager can make decisions that will mean the difference between a W and an L.

Sad part is about last night the options were Raley, Joe Smith, Pruitt, or Bielak

I just don’t see how Click isn’t embarrassed of putting his team in that situation

I guess the jury is still out on Pruitt, with limited appearances, but those other 3 could and should have been left at the airport on any number of return flights from recent road trips.

There should be a ban on any mention of Baez, James and Pruitt helping in 2021. They’re myths at this point. Go get people to replace Smith, Bielak and Raley. Stanek needs to be on notice, if he’s not already. And I don’t want to see Andre Scrubb whenever he’s healthy again, either.

Abreu and Stanek have all the makings of quality setup guys and have shown flashes of having the type of stuff you could eventually turn into a closer. But without the ability to throw a strike when they need to or hell, just know in the general vicinity where the pitch will end up, they’re as close to useless as there is. And they’re a 100 times more reliable than all the other guys we’ve mentioned. That should tell you something.

I guess I could have just made this post a lot shorter by saying:

When Abreu and Stanek are your best options next to Pressly you’re in trouble.

The Astros are done playing pre-deadline baseball games as of Wednesday evening. If Click is remotely competent, he'll have at least a couple of "must" trades for relief pitching done by Friday morning. If he wants to go big game hunting then, so be it.

But you have to get two relief pitchers who can be used in the 7th or 8th innings and not make you want to take your own life.

Not hearing the Astros linked to any chatter coming out in the Twitter rumors today.

Shocking. It’s a shame they haven’t been grooming Javier to be that Octavio Dotel set up guy for Pressly. It’s like they’re unsure whether to use him as the long relief guy for bad starts or the everyday 8th inning guy, which he might be capable of being, if they just tried him as such. It’s obvious no one else in that bullpen can fill that role.

I think they are finally headed that way. Stanek shitting himself may speed up the process. At least give the kid a couple shots and see what happens.

They kinda have. They needed him in a super high leverage situation the other day, and he came through. Building more confidence is never a bad thing.

Jim Bowden Q&A

Jim, say you’re the general manager of the Astros: Which relief pitchers are you targeting, and what are you offering? — Kunwar S.

I would target Craig Kimbrel, Richard Rodríguez and Taylor Rogers, in that order. I would dangle Astros starting pitching prospect Forrest Whitley straight up for Kimbrel. Whitley underwent Tommy John surgery in May and won’t be back until next summer at the earliest. I’m not convinced Whitley, even when healthy, will live up to expectations, and now there’s additional health risk. If that offer didn’t work, I’d look at a top-five and top-15 prospect for Kimbrel, a top-10 and top-20 prospect for Rodríguez, or a top-15 and a top-20 prospect for Rogers, who exited Monday’s game with a sprained left middle finger.

@JonHeyman
Scherzer’s preferred list of teams includes the Dodgers, Giants and Padres (and some others) but is said more about the ability to win this year and going forward (he’d like a team he could stay with) than geography. A bidding war betw the 3 NL West leaders is certainly possible.

These are the 8 teams known to be in on Max Scherzer, via multiple sources:

Dodgers
Giants
Padres
Red Sox
Rays
Blue Jays
Astros
Mets

Also heard Yankees checked in & were told he was unlikely to OK a trade there. Mets could be a long shot for the same reason.

I think this is likely. Those 3 don't want to let the others pick up a guy like Scherzer. Dodgers are in desperate need or SP.

I mean I get why we or anyone would check in and be interested in acquiring him

But use whatever you’re willing to part with to acquire Max and get 2-3 bullpen arms instead and win a fricking World Series

We could have degrom and max in our rotation and we still wouldn’t win anything having to rely on this bullpen sans Pressly to get important outs.

And this is a horrible time to acknowledge this but Pressly is likely to have a shite week or 2 stretch at some point. The odds of him having a flawless season from start to end are pretty small. Lets just pray that happens well before October

Yeah I’ve been waiting for Pressly to slip up and have a bad stretch. He’s essentially been flawless to this point.
