Joe Espada points to “the back of the baseball card” for Jose Abreu as to why he knows he can get out of this funk.

Yeah, this is absolutely what he should say. But Espada was probably asked specifically about Abreu. The baseball card remark sounds coordinated because Bagwell, Brown and Espada have all used it in public forums in the last few days about different players. Easy thing to use when a guy is 27 and starts slow. But he's 37 and has dissolved into a puddle of poo in a year-plus. Frankly, Abreu should be released. But it seems as if they're going to keep him because of the money involved.

Again, I'm worried Espada is the substitute teacher that the players will run over, much like Brown is a glorified farm director posing as a GM. The rot has set in at the top and is permeating through the organization.

Let’s start our closers first. Get behind and bring in a starter and finish the game, hopefully we score some runs to support them late.

Some HPD need to be on Abreu’s arse at every turn. We need a DUI and a resisting arrest or something.

That video segment of “what current player will make an excellent MLB manager?”

All Astros players said, “Martin Maldanado”.

Was Martin the actual manager last year while Dusty was high or asleep the entire season?

He's the least competitive hitter in baseball

This is a legit question, not a troll. How long has Abreu been this bad? This sounds a lot like stuff we were saying about Ozuna in April last year. He was probably a week from being DFA'd before he suddenly caught fire when the calendar flipped to May and he has arguably been the best hitter in baseball since then.

Ozunas batted ball profile still remained pretty good. Question was could you afford to wait it out and did you have a better option to DH.
Abreu profile is god awful. Don't really think it's a comparison.

It’s not. Abreu had apparently fallen off a cliff towards the end of 2022 and White Sox fans/guys that follow this stuff heavy said it looked bad and just wasn’t a guy fatigued from a season.

He was bad but fine because of the rest of the lineup the last like two months of the season and was frankly pretty good in the postseason, drove in some big runs. But he’s completely gone don’t think it’s salvageable. He simply can’t hit velo and he’s pressing so not taking good AB’s and can’t hit spin even if it’s a mistake.

The other bad thing about this team currently is Bregman is equally as bad against velo. He’s got to have 30 or so pop ups that haven’t left the infield this year because he just flat out can’t get on top of the baseball. I’m talking about advantage counts or looking to ambush and the ball is in the zone and he can’t barrel it.

There might be a grain of truth there. I do think players went to him a lot, especially young ones. I think he was “the voice in the clubhouse” that said hard things. I think Dusty made the lineup and pulled strings during the game.

His power outage started at the end of 2022 but he was still hitting decently. Supposedly last year he was dealing with a back injury that he tried to play through which we had even speculated about it. His swing was all arms, had no base to generate any torque in his core. He hit like shite for most of the first half. Think he got IL'd came back and had a decent stretch after the all star break and then fell off again by years end. He was decent in the playoffs, Maybe one last gasp of rejuvenation.

But he looks absolutely done this year. This looks like a 37 year old who was in obvious decline last year and looks to have fallen off a cliff this year. He can't even touch 88 to 90. Routinely swings through it.

At what point do you stop playing Abreu/Singleton and call up Loperfido…I don’t follow milb that closely, is he ready?

He currently strikes out too often. Yes, he’s mashing, but they want him to be more disciplined at the plate. A Quick Look at stats shows 26 SOs out of 64 ABs. That’s 40%. I’m sure he will be up this year.

Just throw him fastballs and he gone. Hard to invest time in Astros with him and Singleton playing. It's a farce.
