Straw probably will get half a season as the starter to prove he can just not totally suck. If he fails, they probably trade for a stopgap. Maybe they sign someone like Maybaw before ST but you can always trade for him or someone similar for a bag of cracklins this summer.
There's little doubt Cluck and the Coup see Pedro Leon as the CF in 2022.

With Straw in the everyday lineup, he will be a suitable replacement for the Castro/Reddick/Tyler White whipping boy role
And maybe the Cuban gets on the fast track
There's been a run of Cuban talent that hasn't been on many bus rides

Very true on Straw and the Cubans.
They just signed Yuli's eventual replacement from Cuba, too.

Norel Gonzales
They're fast tracking him to start at AA (likely where Leon is headed too) so we'll see how his bat plays

Houston Astros expected to sign another Cuban standout
?by Kenny Van Doren4d ago
The Astros are making another international signing.
On Wednesday, Francys Romero reported that the Houston Astros are expected to sign Cuban shortstop Alberto Hernandez for around $1 million. The international prospect is 16 years old and will add to a list of Cuban prospects within the Astros system. The next international signing period doesn’t open until 2022, and Hernandez’s name could be the next Pedro Leon for Houston. The Astros have struck big in the past with their Cuban prospects after signing Yuli Gurriel in 2016 and trading for Yordan Alvarez in 2016 as well.
Hernandez’s expected signing announcement comes two days after the signing of Cuban outfielder/infielder Norel Gonzalez, who is now 26 and will be advanced to the Double-A level. Gonzalez has been playing in the Cuban National Series since the age of 20, and while struggling for two seasons, he found a strong bat as seen in his progression the next couple years. Through 772 at bats, the left-hander hit .315/.395/.457, which are all above-average. There is a large amount of slug behind Gonzalez’s swing as he will most likely hit in the middle of the order. In the field, Gonzalez throws right-handed and can play the corner outfields and first base at an elite level. With eight errors over 368 innings, he can been stellar at turning double plays.

Are they playing A/Hi A this year? I’m not even sure and haven’t seen. Regardless definitely hope for Leon to be up before the end of this year if he’s starting in AA and he performs I think

I have no idea what the minors are doing this year to be honest. I know they consolidated affiliates so there's not so many levels. But I don't know if they're planning to start on time and play a full season
Posted on 2/1/21 at 1:26 pm to Lsuhoohoo
Yeah I guess I’m just wondering if they’re starting both Cuban guys in AA because they’re that far along or because that’s the lowest level with game action this year and they want them getting live at bats ASAP

Just looked it up. They're planning to play a full schedule but AA and below can't report to spring training until MLB and AAA players clear out to limit the number of bodies in camps. So the minors season below AAA will be about a month delayed.

Thx for the Cuban update
My man in MiLB administration for 30 years took a severance package instead of moving to NY, so can't add anything on that front, aside from the fact that he said awhile back they don't know what the Hell they're doing
He's not a fan of the owners and unhappy with the way they're treating the sport and its fans

I was reading through the MLB.com top 100 prospects the other day.. Whitley is our only one at 41. I hadn't realized how long he's been around. We drafted him in 2016 and he's going to be 24 later this season. He's not the youthful high school prospect anymore. Its gotta be this year or never for him. Hes basically wasted the last 3 years of his development between suspensions, injury and non-performance and is playing for a front office that didn't draft him.

MLB treats the minors like a nuisance and not as a way to grow the game generationally. Bad business long term.

Straw wasn't completely awful in 2019 but yeah he was completely awful in 2020 in a way that doesn't inspire in confidence in him as a starter.
Looking at his minor league numbers, he's got a career .305 average and .395 OBP including .300 between AA and AAA. So hes got a track record of hitting in the minors but its all rooted in singles..his highest total of extra base hits was 25 a couple times. His most recent full season that he split between AA and AAA, he struck out 102 times. Thats concerning. Strikeouts are a reality of the times but I don't have much love for a guy with zero power who's gonna strike out 100+ times. Imagine a guy who's only attribute is speed but he struggles to put the ball in play.
Look at a guy like Tony Kemp..another example of a guy with no power who had seemingly mastered the minor league level (.312 career average, walks to strikeouts were within 20 of each other) but 5 years into the majors, he's a .235 hitter

Straw had two potential paths to take, and this offseason was the time to choose.
Either he comes to spring training much stronger with enough pop to give himself a boost in slugging and BABIP.
Or he decides to play against the era's analytics and go old school small ball. Choke up on the bat, hit everything into the ground, master the art of bunting and become a 9-hole pest who gets on base enough to score a bunch of runs.
I assume he's doing the former because that's where the money is.

Coincidentally enough, he had 3 home runs in 12 ST games last year (though 1 was a missed diving catch turned inside the park HR). He's never hit more than 1 HR during any season

Billy Hamilton, that was easy.
