Am I the only one highly worried about fister? Veteran pitchers at times have bad st stats because they are working on things. However, with his bad year last year for me it's a cause for concern. Not panic, as I think he could turn it around, or maybe hasn't got his feel yet, but it's well known that pitchers are ahead of hitters at this point and he is struggling.

How long before the Astros enter the top 10 of payroll in MLB? They are at $89 million this year which puts them at #24

when they work out their deals for Springer, Kuechel, Altuve, etc... they can stay relatively low for a couple of more years... Correa will be a 200-250 million deal though unless they buy out his years...

If Correa hits free agency, I think he will get a lot more as long as he reaches his potential

Jose has been a walking fool this spring. 2 more today to bring him up to 6 in 34 spring plate appearances. I hope that works in his favor. It's of course not a bad thing to have him be more selective but part of his greatness is that he can swing at a ton of bad pitches and turn them into hits.

A few seasons ago they tried to work with him on plate discipline and be more patient to take a walk and he was actually a worse hitter. So they scrapped the plan, just let him be himself and he wins a batting title.

Beyond that, not much positive going on today. Jeremy Hellickson has no hit us through 4.

Wasn't concerned in the beginning but we're getting well into ST at this point and he can't get 1 clean inning. He's given up runs in 4 of his 5 appearances. And Gregerson hasnt even thrown yet.

Carlos is gonna be damn good but he's gonna get his in the K column. Based on his strikeout rate in the spring, he'd K over 140 times over 600 plate appearances.

Apparently we're considering every scrapheap pile of washed up crap for the backup catcher spot.

quote:

The Astros recently had a scout watching Tigers backup Bryan Holaday, McTaggart reports. Holaday is out of options and is stuck behind James McCann and Jarrod Saltalamacchia

quote:

Houston has also reportedly shown interest in Blue Jays minor league backstop A.J. Jimenez, another out of options player.

quote:

Beyond those two, McTaggart lists some of the other potential candidates who could be acquired or available on the waiver wire as Spring Training rolls on. Possible targets include J.P. Arencibia, Carlos Corporan, Tim Federowicz, Ryan Hanigan, Austin Romine and the odd men out of the Rangers’ backup competition between Chris Gimenez, Michael McKenry and Bobby Wilson.

Pretty much all of those guys are laughably bad and would be an automatic out most of the time. Just roll with Tyler Heineman and see what he can do.

I say let's roll with who we have as well. I'm not trading anyone with value for a guy who plays once a week. Give me an average defensive guy and screw hitting. That's most back up catchers amd all you really need.

Drellich went on 790 to talk Astros. Highlights:

Tyler White is the favorite for 1B as of now.

Wandy could make the team as the long man with the injury to LMJ, if they think he's worth the 1.5 mil. Not sure why he wouldn't be if the other options are Straily, Buchanan, Peacock, etc.

Concern for LMJ's shoulder is still low, they were going to limit his innings anyway. Hopefully he can throw on flat ground this week and move up to the mound next week

Kneel before him!

Seems like good insurance until at least LMJ is back. If they think he can do some LOOGY work, why not keep him over Cotts?

I hope they don't bring him back until the start of May. That gives him less usage on the year while we see what Fister can do.

Starting staff is a concern. Fister isn't doing anything to inspire confidence. Fiers is at best a #3 to 4 type. Feldman is a bit if a question mark coming off injury. McHugh is hard to get a read on. Lots of people are saying he's a regression candidate but I'm not so sure.

The surprise guy could be Feliz sometime in May if the back end of the staff is struggling

Feliz

Seems like some people forget about him since he's fallen down the prospect lists but I agree, he has a lot of potential and has pitched well so far this spring.

I think they'll strongly consider bringing up Musgrove during the season as well if people are struggling and he continues to pitch well

Just dug up an old spreadsheet I put together at work in late August last year, José was one of the worst in the team at BB%. He was 12th out of 14 relevant hitters I listed with a 5% BB%. 34 PA is obviously a small sample size, but 6 BBs would be 18%, which is certainly awesome.

Correa at 23% on K rate is below average and also below his 17% clip I had last year. Hopefully we can chalk this up simply to being more aggressive intentionally in ST.

I don't really see that changing. He just loves to get the ball in play

I don't care about his walk rate...I care more about his bonehead baserunning rate.

Future MVP Jake Marisnick should thank his lucky stars he's an excellent defender because offensively he's doing everything he can to get sent to AAA. Dude had been awful this spring.

The defense is the only thing giving him a hope of sticking around.
