Moran is not someone I would count on for 2016. He's got a ceiling of Ben zobrist but that is the top of his range. He could also end up being replacement level. This team has a window open now.

I don't think there are any good free agent 3B available this winter. Luhnow would have to get creative to improve that position, but I think Lowrie will be the starter come opening day

Isn't Tyler White going to try catcher out? Would be huge if he can do it

Oh shite I forgot about that. That would be helpful if that experiment went well.

I may be overvaluing Gomez but we didn't make that trade just to flip him again. He'll be here next year and, if he's healthy, he's an impact player.

I'd rather them commit to VV in the pen and work him into high leverage situations early in the season than trade more prospects for a closer unless it's Kimbrel.

I agree...barring a trade lowrie will start at 3rd until he inevitably gets injured.

Yes List...they are having white work as a catcher this offsets on but I would put the chances of him being a major league catcher next season at a very low. He would be an ideal DH and an improvement over Gattis because he gets on base draws walks more than he strikes out. I would sacrifice a few Homers for that.

When has gomez ever stayed healthy? Him and lowrie are injury prone.

well he had over 500 ABs the past two seasons before this one. Actually, I think it was closer to 550 the past two seasons. It isn't like he is Dexter Fowler who didnt have 500 ABs ever until this season.

If someone wants to pay for him, then sure, let's flip Gomez. But I think that is doubtful. I'm ok with keeping Gomez one more season.

We do need to sure up the bullpen though. Which is crazy considering we were a top 5 bullpen all season until Sept 1st. Then everyone besides Gregerson decided to shite the bed for the rest of the season and postseason. Maybe Sipp was another one who didn't cave in at the end, but everyone else seemed to run out of gas or something all at the same damn time.

I dont like what SD is asking for Kimbrel. Wwwaaaaayyyy too much. Seriously type in "padres ask" into google and look at the first response hahaha. Dont mind the idea of moving VV to the pen early on to see how he handles it. Wojo might also be a decent pen arm or one of the college arms we drafted last year (Eshelman or Ferrell) too. I like the idea of going and getting Drew Storen from DC though. While he was demoted from the closer role, he clearly is unhappy about it, and will probably be out for blood to prove he is a closer. I dont think DC will give him the opportunity since they have Papelbons horrible contract for another year. I also want to see Kemp promoted and moved into the early part of the order. He seems to be on an on base machine and could help putting ducks on the pond consistently. Or maybe as a 2nd leadoff in the 9 hole. Id like to bring back Rasmus and Kazmir, but only if their price is right. I have a feeling both will leave with the opportunity of more money on the open market. Tons of possibilities obviously, but I dont think this team is missing that many pieces really. Im with a lot of you in stashing cash now to work out long term deals for our young core guys.

I tend to think that way too after the Harper ordeal, but he has 11 mill left on his deal.

Do people realize how absolutely insane getting rid of Carlos Gonez sounds?

Dude is a monster defensively and was one of our best hitters in the playoffs.

Completely agree. I cant understand the hate. He was in significant pain and played his arse off. He's an MVP caliber player.

It's not that insane. Marisnick is a better defensive player and their offensive lines were very similar for the second half of the season, in Marisnick's first full season in the bigs also. Hell I could even make an argument that Jake was flat out better in the second half of the season when you really look at the numbers.

Second half of season stats comparison:

Gomez
163 PA, 4 HR, 13 RBI, .242 AVG, .288 OBP, 81 WRC+, 0.9 WAR

Marisnick
154 PA, 4 HR, 15 RBI, .232 AVG, .291 OBP, 88 WRC+, 0.9 WAR

Really there was not much different between the two and I think going forward Marisnick will get better. The end of the season and the postseason his AB's looked a whole lot better and he was barreling up the ball well. In his 7 postseason AB's he had 4 hits as well, while Gomez had 4 hits in his 15 AB's.

If Marisnick can improve offensively and there is an offer out there that involves a trade of Gomez for a top of the line closer then that is a trade the team absolutely should take. It's not like I think Gomez is an awful player and NEEDS to be traded, I just think next season would be his last with the Astros and that if he can bring a good return in a trade that it is something worth exploring.

I think Bregman will be at 3B by the end of the year. Call it a hunch.

Third base has both Duffy and Moran who need a shot to prove they can play in the big leagues next year. By MiLB experience, Duffy may get the first crack at it.

Gomez:
2013 590 PA, .284/.338/.506, 128 wRC+, 7.4 WAR
2014 644 PA, .284/.356/.477, 132 wRC+, 5.7 WAR

Even dealing with injuries in a down season he still put up an above average war of 2.6. Marisnick rates as a better defensive player, but Gomez is significantly above average in his own right. Though he will be 30 next year he has been an elite defender as recently as 2 years back rating higher in UZR/150 than Marisnick ever has in his smaller roles.

ZIPS projections arent out for 2016 yet, but I'll put 100 to 1 odds that Gomez's projects as twice the player Marisnick does for 2016. And I'm a big proponent of Marisnick. I think he holds good value as an elite defender at all 3 OF positions and a quality pinch runner type. He's a guy who you can slot in for a week or 2 at a time and not feel like you're losing a ton. But he's not nearly the player Gomez is right now.

Hey if Gomez is still on the team next year and puts up his 2013 and 2014 numbers than I would be very happy and would honestly hope that happens.

I'm just saying when you look at his contract and look at the teams needs, I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved, that's all. I'm not advocating that he NEEDS to be moved like some of y'all are thinking I'm saying.
