According to Jerry it is 90' high.

I can't believe they let it get that low.

Been a very interesting preseason for AJ. First, runs a fake punt for a TD, and then a punt of his hits the scoreboard in Dallas.

A friend of mine who's been in the football business for 30 years took a tour of the stadium before it opened and the first thing he said was..."they'll hit the scoreboard".

Man knew what he was talking about. It will cost a fortune to raise that bad boy.

My company installed the audio visual infrastructure, including the scoreboards, at the new stadium. We were amazed that the contractor installing the framework installed it so low to the field and we all said that it was going to end up being a problem, now proven.

Oh, and it IS a big hairy deal to raise that thing. The weight of the video screens facing the sidelines is about 170,000 pounds and the two facing the end zones is about 25,000 pounds. This doesn't include the massive steel framework that these screens are attached to. Added together, it weighs about 1.2 million pounds, or about the weight of three fully loaded B-52 bombers.

I wonder what the likelihood is of it happening in an actual game.

Yes - he hit the central screen unit way back in 1976. At the time, the unit was at the height of...take a wild guess...

I'll give you a clue - It's somewhere in this sentence:

quote:

The NFL signed off on the 160-foot long, 90-foot high video board, Jones said, and he does not plan to alter it.

Yup.... 90 feet.

The Superdome ended up raising the screens from a height of 90ft. up to 200ft. Jerry wouldn't even have had to pay a dime to "research" an acceptable lower limit for his monstrosity.

Oh Cowboys.... Idiots from the front office on down. This is yet another example of why, when asked "Who are my favorite teams in the NFL?" - I tell them "The Saints....and whoever is playing the Cowboys."

You may as well ask, "what if the Golden Gate Bridge fell down?" 'cause it's up and secured that well.

Look at it this way... as far as we know, Jones did this on purpose. He likes news, good or bad, as long as it's about HIM. His ego is immense.

Add'l Info

quote:

Jones was adamant that the video screen was built to "league specifications and he had no intentions of raising it to a higher level, but a source indicated that a preliminary discussion already has occurred as to the logistics and costs of such a change. The source said any correction would cost at least $2 million.

The discussion was specific enough, the source said, that if it is safe and feasible to make an alteration to the screen, the Cowboys have a window of opportunity after their Sept. 28 "Monday Night Football" home game against Carolina because they do not return to Cowboys Stadium until Oct. 25 vs. Atlanta. Jones reportedly planned to temporarily raise the board by 25 feet to accommodate sightlines for a scheduled U2 concert in October.

Competition committee has to get this nailed down (rules) before the season starts.

There's no rule that instructs the officials to set the clock back on a re-kick. So if a team is running out the clock at the end of the game and it's 4th down, the punter could just aim for the scoreboard over and over again.

Plus, since it's not a reviewable play, the team has to waste a challenge.

It is lower than planned now because of the upcoming U2 concert. It will be raised after that.

On the radio broadcast last night, Brad Scham said it was low to accommodate U2. But I went looking for a link and it sounds like Brad was wrong. They also don't have the blue Star in the middle of the field. I'm more concerned about that!

They sure aren't, but the difference is that us Saints fans don't try to come off like we are.
