Conference USA has the worst TV deal. All its teams are in financial trouble. Travel expenses are high because the conference is so spread out. I live in Mountain Brook and didn’t even know UAB won the conference until after the game was over because it was played on CBS Sports Network. The conference is getting run this bowl season.

4 six team divisions. 5 division opponents + 1 from each other division. Winner of each goes to a playoff with the first round on Thanksgiving. The championship game the next Saturday. The remaining teams on Thanksgiving are paired to get as many teams as possible bowl eligible.

West
UTSA
UTEP
Rice
Texas State
North Texas
Arkansas State

South (this one’s pretty cool)
ULM
The Cajuns
La Tech
UAB
Southern Miss
South Alabama

East
Troy
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
FAU
FIU
Coastal Carolina

North
App State
Charlotte
MTSU
Western Kentucky
Old Dominion
Marshall

Absolutely not. Currently the SBC is a mirror image of the SEC. Adding back programs that already bolted for CUSA ain’t gonna happen.

Now if ULM drops to FCS or drops Football completely that’s different. Then if I were SBC Commish I’d push TxSt to CUSA to be with more Texas programs. Then add 4 programs to get to 12.

Marshall
Liberty
UAB
USM

Then the SBC would be comprised of all small market strong football programs.

I said the CUSA should go to the Belt. Rather or not the Belt would take them is a different story.

I know Troy and South Alabama would love to get UAB in their conference. I figured the Louisiana schools would feel the same way about Tech.

Marshall is a good program with good support, but I don’t think they’re worth an annual flight if you’re Georgia Southern or someone.

I don't care about all that, but I'd love for UAB to move to literally any other conference.

I briefly dated a UAB cheerleader, so I went to a few games. They were like vs Rice and UTEP I think.

Hard to get excited about playing a bad team half a country away.

It's true. The yearly game against an FCS-level team from Alabama (Alabama State, Alabama A&M) is always more entertaining than the in conference games.

There have been rumblings of a new conference / CUSA split with the west foundation being:

UTEP
UTSA
Rice
North Texas
Louisiana Tech
Southern Miss
NMSU
Ark State
UL-L

This was discussed pre covid - appears it is gaining traction due to covid.

The east CUSA would be:

UAB
Marshall
ODU
WKU
Charlotte
FAU
MTSU
FIA
Troy

The issue is Marshall wanting completely out - and USM deciding if they want east or west.

Also - baseball requirements have been a big issue - no baseball, no go. That puts UNT on the hot seat for sure.

Edit - and many of these schools are looking at going independent - covid has shed some light on the darkness of budgets...and believe being independent would allow for better football scheduling which would generate more revenue.

It is no secret that USM and LaTech have looked into rotational scheduling with Big12 and ACC teams in the past - makes sense as long as you can stomach 4 home games most years - but bring in much, much more money.

I think they would eventually have more fans at their games if they dropped back down, and I think the football program would be better off now if they had not moved up. There's nothing wrong with being a big fish in a little pond. That place was rocking in the 70's and 80's when John David Crow and Pat Collins led them.

I also think a pretty large number of the Group of five conference teams have no business in FBS.

If we had a full playoff like all other levels I think we could see the return of smaller regional conferences and independents since there would be a pathway to national relevance that didn't include being locked into a giant conference with schools that aren't anywhere near you.

I can't imagine anyone at North Texas giving a shite about playing FAU or anyone at Marshall getting pumped to play UTEP.

This will always be the case though. If the worst Sun Belt teams and CUSA teams dropped, the best teams in those conferences would look like they need to drop.

If the P5 split off, Oregon State, Vandy, etc. would need to drop. If those teams dropped, Miss State, Kentucky, etc. would need to drop.

There will always be bottom feeders in college athletics regardless of where the division split is.

Every time a person says all the G5s should be dropped all I can think is be careful what you wish for b/c the next step would be people wanting to to drop the lesser P5 teams.

This season exposed the importance of the early season P5 vs G5/FCS games. I agree with people that there are too many of these games, but with conference only play, a bunch of fans checked out after only a couple of weeks.

Can’t deny UL had an awesome year and that’s great, but calling tech fans arrogant doesn’t make any sense. We know we suck.
