I feel like the challenge of "well, who were they supposed to hire?" is a bit of a straw man. As fans, it's not our job to know who the perfect coach is. There are people who get paid a metric shite ton of money to vet and identify the best coach for a particular team. What we as fans can see is when a particular guy is not getting it done (ie Mike McCarthy) and assume with reasonable expectations that there is something better out there...somewhere (ie Matt LaFleur).
So to that end, I too love David Ross because of who he is as a person and for the story he gave us his last year playing. Magical. But here are my concerns:
1) No coaching experience. Yes, understanding the game is HUGE, and few get it like catchers. But there is the management side...how are you at motivating people, getting the best out of them, making the calls in terms of personnel and strategy all over the field (not just pitching), etc. He has no resume to point to to prove any skill in those areas.
2) His demeanor and likely managing approach. I think most get the sense that he's going to be a real "player's coach" and a great manager in the clubhouse. The team is really gonna love him. Well, we kinda just let that exact manager type walk. So what are we really changing aside from swapping one with years of managerial experience and a WS, for one with none of that (aside, or course, from the glorious WS as a player)?
It feels a bit like the easy choice and more than anything the good PR choice.

I deel Like Joe just got stale and Ross has more energy. They can both be like able players coaches and not be the same style of players coach.
It’s like say all your friends are exactly the same because you like them. Sure maybe they’re similar but you also have friends who are laid back and friend who are high energy.

quote:ive listened to this guy talk on tv about baseball for two years now and he has had some weird moments that make me wonder how this is going to go. remember when he and eduardo perez couldnt get over the fact that sciambi was suggesting you dont have to have a "lead off" hitter and that your best hitter in the lineup should hit first or second? thats they type of stuff he needs to understand if this going to go well and, given what ive seen, it doesnt seem like he does right now. but maybe he does and ive only seen the weird parts of him. idk
I think You’re underestimating then

One of the Cubs biggest issues is the fact that our first batter is batting .212/.294/.383
Joe spend the last two season chasing a lead off hitter.
But I think He’s smart enough to get that Bryant bats second.
And again, how hard is it to implement the batting order the FO gives you?

You’re not getting the same guy you see on tv and on SNL. It’s rather clear he is going to hold the players to a high level of accountability & responsibility or he wouldn’t have gotten the job. To think they’d hire the same guy is silly
The no coaching thing is not a big deal. You usually have it or you don’t. I

if Maddon was touchy-feely and unable to rouse his players to try harder, it would make perfect sports sense for the next manager to have been a former Green Beret who likes to eat unfiltered cigarettes for break
I don't think that's a necessity at all. I do think accountability has been a problem and I do think Rossy will manage that better than Joe.
Now will he be a great manager otherwise? I have no idea but those who pooh-pooh the hire because they think he's a buddy of the players and they can walk all over him were not paying attention when he was a player.

My only worry is that if/when things go bad; that we will lose Ross as a beloved figure.
