If they beat every opponent soundly with the exception of maybe A&M, does Clemson hold that #1 spot all season?

I think they do. The remaining 3 CFP spots should fluctuate week to week.

Of course. Why wouldn’t they?

Are you asking if the defending champs, that seem to be the consensus #1 going into next year, win all their games...will they remain at #1?

Bama bias. That is why.

“Clemson doesn’t play in the SEC, they have a weak schedule, Alabama passes the eye test, they aren’t as deep as Alabama”

Hopefully so. They deserve it, plus I am good with the majority of the praise and attention being on them.

Clemson ain't losing the top spot even if they have close games.

They will be like 2005 USC (returning concensus #1 and close games didn't matter - see Notre Dame game; Fresno State) and Bama will be like Texas...lurking just behind.

I understand why you're asking. I'm not so sure they'll start number 1 since they're losing all those de linemen. Plus, most rankings before the season take into account recruiting rankings, which Alabama will be number 1 in again.

So, I'd have to say they won't start there which means even if they do go undefeated, they obviously won't be number 1 all season.

Bama will always be the number 1 team as long as they are tied with the best record in the NCAA

Clemson has 9 of 11 coming back on offense - loaded with stars across the board that a Bama couldn’t stop. And they are only going to get better as those Soph become juniors and those freshman become Soph. They will be top 5 offense.

Sure, their defense will be a work in progress this year, but I can assure you their D will still be a top 15/20 defense considering the entire replacement players are all 4 and 5 stars. Couple that with the amount of snaps those backups have gotten in blowouts the last two years and that Venables, who has coached in SEVEN championship games will be back, you know their defense will still be very good and among the nations best. They will certainly be much better than any D OU has put on the field during their playoff years.

Whether they are no 1, 2, 3, or 4 wont matter. They will still be a top 4 team next year regardless of their schedule and will deserve to be in the playoffs if they go undefeated. Lose a game in that schedule, that’s a different story. They then expose themselves to being left out due to SOS.

Have you seen Alabama’s schedule?

Duke OOC
at A&M
LSU
at Auburn

The rest of their games they’ll win by 40 points

They could, but they likely won't due to their schedule. They would have to beat EVERYONE soundly, like Alabama did this year. Schedule wasn't all that when the first cfp ranking came out, but they were destroying everyone.

By the time the first rankings come out there will be an undefeated team with a much better schedule that will edge them out.

Was this a dumb question? Yes, yes it was...

If the number one team goes undefeated why would they drop?
